Medical question. Help is appreciated.

A female friend has had some bleeding from her rectum during the last week and a half. It was just a small amount at first, but it's gotten worse the last few days. From what she's told me, the blood is bright red and appears even when she doesn't have a bowel movement, although it is worse when she does.

No other problems, no pain, no change in diet, no injuries or anything like that.

Please, no anal sex jokes, this is quite serious.

Any help is appreciated.

If it's bright red it may very well be a hemroid (sp?) or chaffing from thongs or rough toilet paper. Have her see a doc.

Yep. She needs to get to a doctor immediately. If it were me, I would go to the emergency room, she could be hemorrhaging.

She's about a week late from visting a doctor. Tell her to see one NOW.

I've been telling her she needs to see a doctor. Unfortunetly, she doesn't have medical insurance (lives in the US), and can't afford a doctors visit.

Shes planning on getting insurace soon, but i've told her i'll pay for any doctors vists/tests if need be. She can be quite stubborn, but I hope she'll take me up on the offer.

biteme, you're a nurse right? what do you think the odds are that this is something serious as opposed to just a hemmeroid or something?

thanks for the posts all

Is she noticing blood in her feces on just on her underwear? If it's just on the underwear then it probably chafing or a hemroid like I said earlier. If there is dark to medium colored blood mixed in with her stool then the problem may lie deeper and she needs to see a doctor right away. Grab a magnafying glass ,a flashlight and cloths pin for your nose and inspect her anus closely. Pull her butt cheeks apart in different directions and check for cracks and or redness on the sphincter.

I'm not sure but I think you could send her to a County Hosipital ER without insurance. I'm not how that works, maybe someone here might know.

I'm in nursing school. I don't know the odds, but time could be critical in her situation. She NEEDS to get to a doctor man. Tomorrow. She can go to a community clinic if she doesn't have insurance, they will refer her somewhere if they can't diagnose the problem. Make her go.

I think that's right. They have to take you at a Hospital ER. Here in Dallas if it's not an immediate life threating emergency they can transfer you to Parkland, which is the county hospital. They have to treat you there. We were told that some people without insurance visit the Hospital ER ( the same patient) frequently.

I've passed on your advice. She'll be visiting her school's medical clinic tomorrow. She's as stubborn as a fucking mule, but she promised me she'll go.

I don't know much about health care in the US. What are some of the costs like? I've heard regular checkups are like $400 and up. In Canada everything is free...shit the only thing I every pay for is asprin.

Thanks again guys.

Black, tarry stools= upper G.I. bleed (above 1st section of duodenum)
Blood from rectum (hematochezia)= possible polyp, diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, colonic tumor,or hemmorhoid(can be internal or external). It really needs to be checked out in any event, it is very possibly not serious, but if it is serious and she ignores it she could be in trouble.

I'm in the same boat as her as far as not having insurance. I got a bladder infection when on vacation in July, four days before I came home. I tried self treatment like drinking extra water, cranberry juice, OTC medicine, etc. I came home on a Sunday and was going to go to the Dr. on Monday, but started getting bad side pains because the infection was going to my kidney. I ended up going to the ER and the bill was $456 for them to tell me that I had a severe bladder infection... duh... I could have told them that! I know this has nothing to do with your friends medical problem, but I guess what I'm saying is that you only have one body, take care of it and they'll get their money when they get it.

keep us informed dude, i wanna know what happened, my wife complained of something similar last week. but i dont think it continued.

sometimes you can get micro tears in your shitter from having large poops. and it really doesnt hurt, it just bleeds. if its not in the stool it may be that.

I have had blood there before, but not for over a week before. Everything I've read about having it short term says that if it is dark, then that is very bad, and if it is bright red, then it means it is near the end of the system and likely could be something more minor.

But I sure as hell am no doctor - I just poop a lot.

SHes got bowel cancer and will die. Shell get to filthen herself via her stomach for a few years first. At least shell have a nice pink clean anus.

Or maybe its just nothing and shell be fine. never know

ok, i'll start off by saying she should go and see a doctor....ingrowing toenail and this is a good place to ask advice, blood coming out your ass and you should be in a docs office

bright red indicated the end/latter of the GI traact but how high up the problem is can only be definitivly diagnosed by a doc sticking something up.

is the blood mixed with the stool?
is it always bright red?
is mucus mixed in with it?
does she have a temperature? chills? unwell in any other way?
any pain? its character? does it spread? is it upon defacation? what have painkillers done?
what medication is she on?
whats the stool like? whats the stool colour, consitency, smell, does it float?
bowel frequency, how often does she go, has she noticed any change?
past medical or surgical history involving the abdomen?
family history of any bowel problems?
does she smoke?
whats the volume of blood like? is it dotting on the toilet paper or a big torrent, and as i said before is it mixed in?
when she wipes, can she feel anything odd....like softish stuff coming out of her rectum....its very soft?

good luck! if its gone on this long, she should take a day off and find a free fucking clinic....seriously, women might think bleeding from an orifice is normal, but it isnt. im no doctor but i would definately see one if blood was coming out of my ass. :)

She went to the clinic today. They have no idea what the problem is, although they said cancer is highly unlikely, and it's not hemmeriods.

The doc told her to wait 'til Friday. If the bleeding hasn't stopped by then, they'll have to run some tests.

There's no pain, and everything else is normal. Weird.

I'll update when I know more. Thanks again everyone.

It good to went to the dr.

Or vitamin E?

This has happend to me. But I was taking too many asprins.

Yes Please let us know what she finds out.
