Media rant: How much info does the public deserve?

I was watching the news last night when they talked about the possible invasion of Iraq and how many troops, etc., etc. Does the general public REALLY need to know the specifics of such operations BEFORE they happen? What about the ongoing coverage of missions and giving away locations? WTF?!?

Probably just a ploy of misinformation and they're going to really just drop a nuke on Bahgdad.

I was thinking the same thing as I was listening to the news on the way into work this morning. They said that we might go in there in a year or something. I was thinking it was strange to say that.

i hate how the media talks shit about drugs and what not and also how it gives one side of the story. the media (most television) educates most of the sheep here

Goverment officials cant keep their sex lifes private let alone sensitive information.

Actually there is "laws" or codes of ethics that journalists must follow...

But basically, unless the person holding the press conference says "This is a matter of national security"...they are free to print or broadcast anything....

I remember hearing somewhere that during the Gulf war that Iraq's best friend was CNN.

True dat. Wasn't CNN (complete with cameras and spotlights)waiting on the beach when some Marines did a night invasion?

I hate the fucking media giving out information that isn't needed.

Fucking journalists like Geraldo piss me off too.

How would the American public make educated decisions about electing officials when they do not know what is going on?

I am not for giving my tax dollars for somthing I do not agree with. I think Bill Clinton did enough shit behind our backs to last a lifetime.

Well, as far as military planning and where the President is, ect...I don't believe we need to know where he is. Like the day of 9-11. They were telling everyone where the son a bitch was the whole time. Don't these fucking assholes understand that sometimes you shouldn't report anything.

Fuck the american media. They give out the wrong info for their own benefit (re: sensationalism) 99% of the time....fucking cocksuckers....that is why I DON'T watch television PERIOD.

I challenge anyone here to give up TV totally for a period of oh say, 6 months, entertain yourself with books, internet, etc....and tell me your head doesn't feel less cloudy and your cognition improves. TV is like McDonalds for the brain.

in such a case no

if the information gives away tactical nfoprmation or info that c be used to kill friendly soldiers needlessly, then they shouldnt. releasing the info afterwards or simply informing CNN they have invaded should be enough, telling them enough detail as to determine specifics shouldnt be immeadiately neccessary

after a short period i think info should be fully disclosed, and thats where i think the giovernment slips up due to it being afraid of poor puiblic opinion.....40 years declassfcation and that sort of stuff

The information came from a source within the government. If people want to get upset about this, they need to look at the source of the information, not the people reporting it.

Good point, but I would just be concerned about our media broadcasting tactical information to the enemy prior to it happening. However, after the fact there should be a post-mortem on what exactly happened, and how effective it was, so that, lkie you said the American public can make an educated decision.

Of course people shouldnt know that much, but remember if TV networks such as CNN know strategic info its cause of a leak among high ranked in the Army.....

EXACTLY!!! The media is the only fucking thing to keep our government accountable!!! Wake up!!

And to further big4life's point, remember the short-lived Department of Disinformation? That info was leaked by our own government too.

accountable and our government do not go hand and hand.

I'm in journalism, but I still think that some things don't need to be made public. Then there are cases where the public doesn't know enough. THere's a saying..."What the public doesn't know, will hurt them." THis can be true a lot of times. However, in these cases, that's not pertinent information that needs to be known.

yeah like over here people are worried bout the link between autism and MMR, to the extent they are refusing vaccination, and now there are measles/mumps epidemics

the vast majority of the public are too underinformed about suff like health etc to make descisons and some tabloids present news in such a way it freaks the shit outta people :(

I suspect the report was what's called a "trial balloon." It's very usual for government people, when planning a controversial action, to "leak" the story, or some aspect of it, to test public reaction.

In any case, the rumored plan to attack Iraq has been the subject of speculation for a couple of months throughout the press.

To quote a famous "doctor," "Read Marcus Aurelius. First thing, simplicity. Ask of each and every thing`what is it in itself, what is its nature´?"

What is the media? Why does it exist? What does it do?

Latest news is that we are gonna start up talks again with the 2nd of the Axis of evils, North Korea..

Again, mis-information redirecting the media from the real plan of slipping a Nuke into North Korea on Air force one..

EXACTLY.......our government is accountable for whoever is lining their pockets......

accountable for fooling the majority of the American public, by using the media....precisely why I dont/haven't watched television since the 15th of Sept.

I got tired of watching the replay of those images......BBC is cool, sometimes.....
