how could I try to get into some acting. Take classes and show up for casting calls and such, or do you need to be called for these?

Get into an acting troupe and build a resume'.

In the meantime find an agent and get some headshots done and they will probably use you in some background shots....no dialogue but it is experience to put on a resume.

A good agent will charge 10-15% of the money you are paid when they book you.

Do NOT pay money upfront.
