Maxed on deads tonight

I've never maxed on anything before but I read a post last night about someone that maxed on deads and was psyched...and today was my back day. So I warm up...135x15, 225x12...then 315x1...CAKE! Another plate on each side...grip, pull...nothing :( Step back...give it a piece of my mind...grip, pull...about 8 inches :( So I drop it down to 365...grip, pull...no dice. WTF? I went back to 315 and pulled 6 single reps with about 20 sec between...no problem. I had 10 reps of 270 last week after 225X15x2. So I'm a little bummed but I don't really know what I expected...I've been cutting for 6 weeks (down to 170lbs) working 12-15 rep sets on everything and have never worked less than 6-8 rep sets anyway. Started doing deads 6 months ago.

First, thats a big jump...no reason to be bummed:)

It could totally be mental bro. If you've never maxed out on deads...the feeling of your 1RM is a very strange thing. Its extremely intense and if you haven't felt a true 1RM before, you may be apt to believe that you're actually failing the pull.

Also, you've been cutting for 6 weeks, don't expect to be superman my friend, your body needs lots of fuel for a big pull like that:)

Lay off deads for a little bit and attack 4 plates next time with a solid attitude and you WILL pull it. Until then, do some assistance work.

We'll be awaiting your next post...

"HOLY SHIT, 405 WAS EASY!":fro:

I just saw this response from BlkWS6 on another similar thread that says it well.....

"Rich I dont know about you but I think a lot of it is a big mental game when it comes to adding that fourth plate on for 405lbs. I remember at the end of last summer I had that goal in mind as well. I put the plates on and felt good. Went 365lbs then went right to 405lbs and missed. I dropped back down to 385lbs and hit it real solid. Put that fourth plate on again, and missed again. For me I think I was psyched out a little. I got so pumped up for that lift that I think I messed myself up! Im sure you will get it next time. Also, now that you are doing WSB I think the speed work and board presses (and floor presses) will have you killing 405lbs in no time."

WS6...
hope you don't mind me quoting you, you pontiac driving prick:)

Thanks bro...Good points. I'm not really in maxing mode right now.

To tell you the truth though...it really felt like I just couldn't hold the damn bar...I think I easily had it in my back/legs but just couldn't hook up strong enough. All the bars at the gym are very worn with little to no knurling left. I definitely had a positive attitude...was actually surprised I didn't pull it.

I will pull those damn 4 plates!
