any read these two books? i picked them up because they won a pulitzer (or whatever) and they have a good rep for being a good read. but i didnt see it. the storyline doesnt fit with history but that is understandable since the main character was telling the story from memory. the art sucked but thats understandable as well, since it is an indie book. IMO, it didnt live to its hype

Some background for those who haven't seen it... Art Spiegelman, the son of Holocaust survivors, retold his parents' memories of that era in the form of a comic book. The Jews are portrayed as mice (Maus being German for mouse) and the Nazis as cats.

That makes it sound hopelessly stupid, but it's not. People weren't quite sure what to think of it at first, but it has come to be regarded as a serious work of art, and it has made its author a force to be reckoned with in the art world.

I've heard he has ticked off some people in the community because he has used his fame as a blunt instrument... but the work should still be judged on its own merits. You're right about the story being as fuzzy as an old man's memory; that's where it came from, after all.
