A string of deadly blasts has hit three Madrid train stations during the rush hour, killing at least 60 people, Spain's Interior Ministry has said.
Police cars raced to the Atocha train station in the heart of the Spanish capital, where an explosion destroyed carriages of a suburban train.

Two other train stations were also hit by the near simultaneous explosions.

Spain's government has blamed Basque separatist group Eta for the attacks which come ahead of Sunday's elections.

Blood donations

The blast at Atocha happened at about 0630 GMT as a train was pulling into the station, which lies in the heart of Madrid.

"People started to scream and run, some bumping into each other," Juani Fernandez, a civil servant who was on the platform, told the Associated Press.

Commuters describe chaos
" I saw people with blood pouring from them, people on the ground."

There were also scenes of destruction and chaos at two other commuter stations, Santa Eugenia and El Pozo.

The Interior Ministry has said that so far 62 people are known to have died in the three blasts.

Atocha is a huge rail station used by commuter and inter-city trains, which also has a metro station.

Madrid hospitals have made an urgent appeal for blood donations.

Spain's political parties have suspended campaigning for Sunday's poll.

Bomb plots

There has been no claim of responsibility but the government was quick to blame Eta.

Government spokesman Eduardo Zaplana condemned what he called "an attack on Spanish democracy", calling Eta "a criminal gang of killers."

Last month, two suspected Eta members were arrested as they headed to Madrid in a truck laden with explosives.

Spanish police said they were arrested about 140km outside the city with 500kg of explosives hidden in the vehicle.

Government officials believe the men were planning an attack in the lead-up to Spain's general election.

And last December, Spanish authorities said they foiled a Basque separatist plot to blow up a train at a Madrid rail station.

One powerful 25-kilo (50 lb) bomb was placed on a train travelling from San Sebastian to Madrid, Interior Minister Angel Acebes said.

Eta has killed more than 800 people in its campaign since the late 1960s.

I cannot imagine the horror of the families.

Fight your fight, but fight the oppressors, not their flock.

Yup definitely agree with you Chefwide - Madrid is my favourite "Western" city but I've spent time in Bilbao as well - just on the phone to some Spanish folks in our Madrid office here - total panic going on.
