MARTIAL ARTISTS!!! Some questions.

Just wondering who trains in martial arts on ELITE and what the discipline is?
How long have you trained?
What does your training consist of?
What are your favorite techniques?
What are your strengths?
What are your weaknesses?
What pro's do you admire?
Feel free to add more info.
I hope you guys will respond and share your martial arts backgrounds with me and the rest of us.

I took Tae Kwon Do (ATA) when I was a kid, then I went back into it ten yrs. ago when it was USTA and it sucked! It was nothing more than arobic kickboxing and lost it's dicipline. Right before I took USTA; I was taking Akido for about six months and really enjoyed it. I would like to go back into Akido someday but only with the right school. A lot of schools do not teach in true Akido tradition you have a lot of schools teaching sort of like Aki Jujitsu.

Well I guess I'll start.

Past training:Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu,and Kuk Sool Won

Current discipline: Shootfighting/Pancrase aka Pankration and Muay Thai

Years trained: Negligible stints with Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu, and Kuk Sool Won. 1 year in Shootfighting and Muay Thai

My training consists of kicks, punches, open hand slaps and strikes, elbow strikes, head butts, knee strikes, slams, suplexes, takedowns, grappling, submissions, etc.

My favorite techniques are triangle chokes, armbars, keylocks, guilotine chokes, sleeper chokes, rear-naked chokes, heel hooks, achilles locks, ankle locks, low thai kicks, elbow strikes, left hooks, right crosses, and front thrust kicks.

My strengths are in thai kicks, key locks, and triangle chokes.

My weaknesses are speed and getting top position against other grapplers.

I admire Ken Shamrock, Frank Shamrock, Bart Vale, Sakaraba, the Gracies, and many more.

What about you guys?

not usre if i should reply to this since i aint been doing it long....white crane kung fu for 5 months, and im waiting for the next grading. ive only learnt 1 form, my strengths are punching as i had done lots of bag work previously so had practised, my weak points are my flexibilty as its piss poor. oh yeah and not actually having formally sparred yet :bawling: (have to wain till grading)

Art: Tang Soo Do
Style: Moo Duk Kwan
Years Trained: 15
Current Rank: 3rd Degree Black Belt w/ Black Sam Dan Patch (signifies I am one year from testing for Master)

Our training consists of the kicking and sparring techniques found in Tae Kwon Do, but also focuses much more on punching, in-fighting (hap ki do - joint locks, basic ground-fighting), and unlike Tae Kwon Do, Tang Soo Do is a far more disciplined and ancient art (no cardio-kickboxing).

I don't know of any pro's that practiced Tang Soo Do except for Chuck Norris. I admire my Grandmaster the most, Kwan Jang Nim Chang Tong In.

Art: Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do
Years: 8
Current Training: JKD, Wing Chun, Kali Stick Fighting, Boxing, K boxing

Training: Sparring is invaluable, using a wooden dummy is also very good. Repetition, punches, kicks, locks, holds, grappling, isometric training, physical conditioning ...... running, skipping, heavy bag work, speed ball - floor to ceiling & ceiling

Conditioning of hands, gravel pads etc.

must create a solid foundation, learn footwork, then your lead jab.... its your primary weapon, next cross, then hook, then uppercuts ..... imagine a cross on the body, then place an X over the join, these are your 9 lines of entry, ..... work on the centerline theory, b cautious with this, dont limit yourself to it.
Work kicks, primary ...... side kick, front kick, shin kick, stomp, thai kick.... rear kick .......
next work others, rear kick, donkey kick,

try diffrent arts, sparr with people who do diffrent arts, this is my favorite training, full contact sparring, u will learn alot ..... i feel this is THE most effective training to prepare you for a REAL situation. I am currently graded Phase 3, black. I enter UFC's in the uk. etc, contact me if u want any more info ... training methods, help with moves etc, ..... i especially focus my BB around my art. ...... i consider myself a martial scientist rather than artist. Scientific street fighting.

Hi Eddy

I train at the Cape Coral Florida school. Bart is almost directly across from us on the other coast, but I have never personally trained at the Miami school. I always try to make his seminars when he makes it to our side of the state though.

If you get the time sign up at the Sherdog.com message board. Its an MMA board and you can catch me under the name ISFA SHOOTFIGHTER.

The Art I train in is Kung Fu San Soo.
I have been training for 7 years In San Soo
I also cross train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai.
My strengths are definitely in the fact that I cross train because I believe that no art covers all aspects of fighting 100%.
Every MA has something to teach you, it's just a matter of you being willing to learn. I personally would like to learn as many arts as I can in my lifetime.
My favorite competitors are all of the Machado Jiu Jitsu boyz, Tito Ortiz, Kevin Randleman, and last but not least Sakuraba.
But for me the real heroes in Martial arts have been my Instructors, and all my brothers that I have trained with over the years.

'nuff said

Currently training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I have to share this bit of wisdom for all prospective martial artists; Train where it's fun.

If you have a top ranked practicioner of your art training you, but you hate it, you will get less out of your time than you would training with a talented journeyman that you enjoyed working with.

Belive me I know of what I speak. For the last 18 years I have trianed continuously in various martial arts; Sim Lum Kung fu, Chin Na, Judo, Aikido, Hap Ki Do, Aki Jiu Jitsu, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, western boxing, escrima even some capioera.

Favorite training is Heavy lifting for power followed up with up hill wind sprints. Closest thing to fighting I have found when I can't get someone on the mat with me.

Favorite techs; Flying armbar (looks cool when you nail this) Reversing hip throws into a sacrifice take down where I land in half guard :p and shin kicks to the femoral bicep at an upward angle. I love doing that to Muy Thai guys.

i have trained shaolin kung fu for 2 years and karate for 1 year it was great, i quit a year ago so i could focus on bb.

but martial arts has a place in my heart and i might take it up later on. ;) ;)

lets see

I trained in Shotokan Karate for 6 years, Korean TaeKwonDo for 4 years, Wingchun kungfu 4 years, Taisabaki karate jutsu for 2 years, all my styles overlapped a couple of years, i also took jujitsu and muaythai kickboxing for a shot time

Do we post answers to your question Kwai because we like to talk about ourselves? Are we trying to impress someone....? or can wwe genuinely talk about our martial journey with humility and in the belief that in others knowing our path they will gain something good form this sharing?
So...in saying all that...
Years Training: 29
Art: Fung Gau
Favourite Technique: Ashtray Across Back Of Head Technique
Training Methods: technical and reaction drills, relaxation and soft and hard chi gung for internal conditioning, mook jong (lots of), gung lik exercises and gang conditioning (basically isometric to plyometric transitions in technique) awareness exercises (any I can find realy, if you don't know its coming you've been splattered by it) lots of feeding technique and very little sparring as its hard to find opponents when they are all dead.....joking, Oh, we put a lot of emphysis on sexual energy and its cultivation and use...its a kind of chi gung while shagging and tends to very much intensify the whole experience with your partner if you can get over the impotence thang.
Weapon training includes dragon pole, single section whip and double sticks (bit like kali, some of the drills remind me of hubud lupud or whatever its called) and short knife...mostly to improve reactions but I find the sacred art of snail dodging suffices for most day to day practice. Red sand palm, iron bell and other techniques are integral because we feel that relying on the technical is a dangerous thing, we still require conditoning and a little of something else that a martial scientist might miss...ooh, that was provocative. We strongly advocate saying 'sorry' before taking someones head off or asking for your victims mothers name. Finally, we believe that the martial journey is a personal one, an intimate path with many bonuses and being a bit dangerous is the least of its rewards. We do not believe in respecting your sifu and seniors as we wish to respect everybody as much as they deserve and while my master can puncture me whith great ease I can play piano....so he better respect me straight back or he gets the Steinway attack.

Freestyle Jujitsu
Muaythai for strikng - Greco Roman wrestling for throws - Freestyle wrestling for takedowns - BJJ gi / no gi ground techniques.
I've been training for 7 years.
We try to mix it all up. Some days we might just do wrestling or muaythai. Other days we do technigues with a muaythai roundhose kick into a greco throw in to a lappel choke.
The strenghts: We have people who have trained for a long time specificly in each part of our art. We also live close to L.A. - So we get new Machado sport & Fabiano Iha vale tudo techniques.
I admire: Tito Ortiz - Pedro Rizzo -Fabiano Iha - my brother ( great sport bjj player)

Trained since 1982...
Wing Chun
Jun Fan Gung Fu
Jeet Kune Do
Kali
Doce Pares escrima
BJJ and other ground fighting techs
Muay Thai
Silat (Maphilindo, etc.)
A bro or two up above stated what JKD and no holds barred trainng is like....
Fave techniques, what ever dispatches my opponent with extreme predjudice in the least and most effective amount of time.lol

Favorite technique above all, chambering a 9mm hollow point in a Mac11 with a 30 round clip ready to burn...ha ha just kidding...maybe
