(and yes both are disgusting)

Marijuana Smoke Contains Higher Levels Of Certain Toxins Than Tobacco Smoke

ScienceDaily (Dec. 18, 2007) — Here's another reason to "keep off the grass." Researchers in Canada report that marijuana smoke contains significantly higher levels of several toxic compounds -- including ammonia and hydrogen cyanide -- than tobacco smoke and may therefore pose similar health risks.

David Moir and colleagues note that researchers have conducted extensive studies on the chemical composition of tobacco smoke, which contains a host of toxic substances, including about 50 that can cause cancer. However, there has been relatively little research on the chemical composition of marijuana smoke.

In this new study, researchers compared marijuana smoke to tobacco smoke, using smoking machines to simulate the smoking habits of users. The scientists found that ammonia levels were 20 times higher in the marijuana smoke than in the tobacco smoke, while hydrogen cyanide, nitric oxide and certain aromatic amines occurred at levels 3-5 times higher in the marijuana smoke, they say. The finding is "important information for public health and communication of the risk related to exposure to such materials," say the researchers.

The study, "A Comparison of Mainstream and Sidestream Marijuana and Tobacco Cigarette Smoke Produced under Two Machine Smoking Conditions," is scheduled for the Dec. 17 issue of ACS' Chemical Research in Toxicology.

a good reason NOT to smoke your week.

I use a vaporizor now which is far healthier than smoking.

This has been known, fortunetely you don't have to take 60 drags of a joint throughout the day to get an effect you desire like addicted tobacco users do

i was trained in critical analysis with particular emphasis being put on conflicting evidence/studies in regards to drugs (which is logical, given that drug reps beat your door down all day long as a pharmacist)

anyway im always really really wary of anything to do with marijuana, because you seldom find truly unbiased studies because of the political climate regarding the issue. so, id like to know who paid for this study, and why they published it. if it was a bunch of kids in college doing their honours, then great. id be more inclined to take what they ahve to say seriously

on the surface though, the first thing that strikes me is that ok, you have higher ammonia/toxin levels to the tune of a factor of 5. thats fine. but the thing is that the average marijuana user smoking out of a water pipe or metal pipe with a conepiece is going to smoke what, the equaivalent of a quarter of a cigarette? half a cigarette? worth of combustible organic material before they stop (i daresay that half a tobacco cigarette worth of weed would fill a conepiece about 4 times and knock most people on their ass)

so, if you multiply it all out - half a cig worth of combustible material at a ratio of 5x more toxins means that a weed user is going to suffer toxicity in line with 2.5 cigarettes worth of tobacco....and i don know about you guys, but most people who smoke 2.5 cigarettes a day barely even class themelves as smokers.

what does the average cigarette smoker smoke? i know people who smoke 4 packs a day, but theyre truly at the high end of the "i hate my life and am killing myself" spectrum. social smokers barely buy their own packs - they seem to bum off other peopel more than anything. so what are we going to call average use? one pack (25-30 cigarettes) spread over, say, 3 days? fair? 8-10 cigarettes a day seem fair?

if so, tobaccos smoking still comes in as being 3x more harmful (or so)

the other thing to consider is that harm from smoking isnt restricted to toxin dose - dosage frequency plays a role. other chemicals play a role. im sure theres some form of synergism that going to come up.

when youre talking about organic substances, that contain hundreds of chemicals, that you burn to get thousands of chemicals, it can get kinda...messy...and therefore teh ONLY sort of study you should give a shit about is one that looks at 2 large patient groups - tobacco smokers and weed smokers - who smoke their combustible alone, and then either follow them for a period of years/decades and see what happens, OR do a retro analysis of what has happened to them after the fact (less reliable, but cheaper)

my money is on the pot smokers being healthier overall. so long as they dont go psychotic of course :)

ciao :)

I love my triple chamber bubbler. Its so smooth.

I agree though, 2-3 hit of really good dro is no where near as much toxic as 1 cig. Not to mention people can smoke up to 2 packs a day. Also, im sure your body gets rid of that toxin very fast, faster than if you were to smoke more than one cig.
