Manual vs. automatic

Do you know how to drive a stick shift? I'm finding these days there are alot of people who have never learned.

Also, which do you prefer? Stick shift or automatic?

Standard better response and gas mileage if you can run the gears well. I know a lot of people who have only driven automatics becasue their parents bought them a car with auto.

Cheers,
Scotsman

i live in la. i'm stuck with auto. you'll kill yourself if u had manual and had to drive on the freeways.

i actually taught myself how to drive stick shift (although not very well LOL). i was in high school and there was no one home and hte only car in the drive was my dad's 1980something Honda Prelude. So i decided i wanted to go pick up my friends and cruise around town with the sunroof open (cuz that makes me real cool). So the driveway is on an incline and i turn the car on and roll it down backwards into the street. i dont remember too much after that except about 3 hours of joyriding around town with 4 people in the car and i never got past 2nd gear LOL

I learned on stick shift, but I could not drive one today, nor would I want to.

I ahev a hard enough time driving "good" on an automatic (I'm easilly distracted nothe road), I can't imagine if i had to also worry about shifting gears and all that shit. It would totally kill my high.

I prefer a manual transmission on a sports car. Used to love dropping the hammer in my 98 Camaro SS whenever I'd see some punk in his neon.

ive always driven a stick.. mainly because my cars have been sports cars.

If I were to get a sedan or SUV i'd go automatic.

got to agree with that... i do too much stop and go and driving a stick just got annoying as fuck.... so i compromised and got an eclipse with a sporttronic transmission.

always drove auto.... then got a bike and learned the basics, thenjust applied it to a car and it was easy

stick is a pain, though one of my cars is a stick.

My Saturn is auto, too easy, the Lexus can be either manual or auto...sometimes I put the shit in manual on the highway, and the Morgan is a 4 speed 'stick'.

So I do it all.

I agree with this. My cherokee is an auto while my CJ7 is a manual. I would never buy a sports car that wasn't a manual, defeats the purpose of a sports car if it's auto.

Drove automatic most of my life.. then at 27 yrs old decided to buy a car i wanted that came only in manual...took a few weekends of driving to get used to it.. finally took it out on the secondary roads, then primary ones....

Like the feel of a manual than automatic.. only thing is hard to eat/drink while driving manual in stop/go traffic....but sure is fun to downshift and take off....

I can drive both and a motorcycle. I prefer automatic in a car or SUV, manual if I have to use a truck for hauling stuff and automatic would just be silly on a motorcycle.

I can only drive a manual.

Never learned how to drive an automatic.

Sequential, otherwise automatic.

Today's automatic boxes are the same or even better than manual. Take the Mercedes' Touchshift or their new 7G-Tronic. Beats any manual box. Sequentials suck for urban driving but rules on the track.

i love a manual tranny

but my ride is an auto

automatics fit well with the supercharger

i drove a m3 with the smg tranny and didnt like it as much as a reg 6 spd gear box

manual sucks hard when you are driving in town, you always upshift and downshift.

I greatly prefer auto, all the cars ive owned were auto.

I seem to do OK down here. I like the instant power from downshifting to merge and get away from bad situations on the road. Lets face it bumper to bumper sucks whether auto or manual.

Matt, I recognize that a modern automatic can perform as well as a manual, but numbers really don't matter on the street, daily-driving is all about the fun. I always drive a manual, 'cause I get bored if there's nothing to do with my left foot.

I drive auto. I know how to drive stick, but not well. I couldn't deal with manual on a full-time basis. It fucks with my zen-like driving style.
