Making Songs on Your Computer

Have any of you ever used your own computer to make original music? If so, what program did you use?

I've been wanting to make a few songs for my friends, but I didnt know what programs would be good for making beats (something that sounds ok and is very easily to use/learn). Is it hard to layer your voice over the beats or does it come easily?

I dont plan on it being the highest quality in the world but I'd like it to sound as decent as software beats with computer microphone vocals can sound. Any recommendations?

Note: the music is rap, so I'll need software that has synthesizer options and of course lots of drum beats.

Karma to anyone who successfully helps me.

everyday.

I started out making beats on Reason v.1.0 I chose that program cus it's like having a REAL hardware studio and it gave me a feel of how different sound modules can interact with each other. It's got a drum machine, sampler, synth, sequencer all in one package that's worth it for the price www.propellerheads.se

other ppl started out with Fruity Loops to bang out some beats.

check those 2 out for making the beats.

I use Cubase 5.1 www.cubase.net to record/multi-track vocals cus those 2 programs above can't record audio.

1. make your beat in one of the programs
2. export it to .wav format
3. open it (beat) in a track in Cubase
4. press record in Cubase to record vocals.

check this site out www.spinwarp.com for tutorials

feel free to ask me any questions. I'll try and answer them asap. Also Saint808 records too. I dunno if he still does, but before.

Yeah I make music... including producing rap.

Reason is very cool. I dont have it but Ive seen it and its pretty damn powerful.

I use Cubase, its an awsome program and probably the most popular. But I also have a ton of hardwear (sythns, samplers ... shit like that).

I have the programs but the only music I ever made was completely terrible or it sounded just like the sample they started you with. It takes a lot of time to get good at a lot of that stuff...and I am not all that into it.

MAKING SONGS

Cubase is a bit extreme for beginners.

Start off with Acid 3.0 (sequences multi tracking)
-overlapping sounds (voice overs)
-there are downloadable wave files so you can loop these bits.

You can render or add effects with SoundForge.
-add reverd to your vocals, flanger, etc.

Pro tools is probably the most versatile program

Fruity loops is cool too, but thats more geared to electronic sounding music. It doesnt sound acoustic at all.

Hope this helps.
