Main Coon cat

They're great cats with lots of personality, but the long hair takes lots of maintenance. Without daily brushing they will get matted hair knots that are painful for the cat and have to be cut out.

Short hair cats for the win.

Me and my girlfriend really want one, I'm sure we can spare time for some brushing.

Do you know how common the shorthair are? I would probably rather have one of them.

Pretty comman. Actually have seen more short haired than long haired.
You can try going to the local spca shelter and seeing if they know of any breeders in your area or go to a local petsmart..They should be able to tell you of any breeders that are local and stuff like that.

Had one. I'll scan a pic later. He was like 24 pounds and really strong. Some Maine coons have heart problems which is why most die fairly early.

A friend's next door neighbor had a big Maine Coon Cat named Gallahad. She used to travel for work a lot, and just leave the cat outside when she was out of town. So he spent a lot of time at my friend's house when he needed some affection.

Next door chickie moved, to another neighborhood that is about five miles away. One day the cat turned up on my friend's doorstep, she must have locked him outside again and he didn't know what else to do but to go back to his old stomping grounds. To get there he would have had to cross quite a number of very busy streets, and one body of water, not to mention the distance.
