Hey, this question has been asked a lot but I've never heard your opinion on the matter.

How much of a detriment is getting a bit drunk say two times a week when it comes to muscle and strength gains ?

Tough to say, the body can get used to and overcome a lot. I imagine 6-8 drinks is enough to have an impact on hydration and normal functioning to some degree. Likely not night and day or hugely significant but I'd think if someone controlled for everything (which is impossible) you might get some type of significant result over a long enough period.

To be honest though, plenty of guys have gotten really big and really strong while drinking like that - probably even worse. A guy who lifted for Cuba told me a story about training outside while drinking beer and smoking cigarettes. This guy was a great lifter at that time too.

Not saying that this is a good model, or ideal behavior or that there isn't some tradeoff somewhere but simply that BBing has a massive "lifestyle" focus and seems to promote an idea that everything has to be absolutely perfect on a daily basis down to trace mineral intake to make decent progress. Then again you look at the training that is typical for BBing boards and the obcessive fear of losing etched abs that keeps calorie intake right at the margin, and I guess you do need to be perfect if you want to see results from that. If training is solid (like the type of stuff most are doing here in this section) and caloric intake is adequate, providing you don't screw yourself over too badly - you should do fine.

Now, I'm sure some nimrod will find this post and call it heretical and think I'm telling everyone to drink and smoke while they train, get blasted at night, and eat like a fat slob. That's not what I'm saying. Personally, I don't drink any more. It has nothing to do with lifting or muscle, I just feel better and never much cared for it anyway (although I've done more than my share of it). What I am saying is that if you are trying to achieve a goal, micromanaging the 1% to 3% stuff should be worried about after getting those big 40% blocks tuned up and out of the way first. If that goal is 'muscle', your blocks will be defined mostly by solid training and adequate caloric intake with reasonable balance - unless of course you have a real problem somewhere (i.e. you are drunk all the time). If your goal is 'bodybuilding lifestyle' well, maybe drinking should be a lot less and more infrequent - you'll also need some clown pants, a fanny pack, Ottomix, and a big drug budget so take that for what it's worth :).

Well, in recent personal experiences, I've drank quite heavily a few times the night before a hard training session and had not been affected. But by heavily I mean, 5-6 mixed drinks and a few beers (I'm not a heavy drinker..). Just enough to get me to the point of reckless but not too reckless. Not like falling over or anything, but fun :) All I had to do was make sure I had something to eat as I sobered up and a crapload of water. Sleep lots, wake up, and lift to your heart's desire. I would definately not drink before a competition or something like that though.

When I do drink - it is typically only on weekends. If there is a Saturday lift planned (there usually is) Friday is very lite - say 6-8 pints - followed by a half gallon of water and some gatorade before bed. Saturday I can let loose a little more. But never to the falling down point. And as for during the week - hardly if ever. One beer will throw my system off (a little psychological more than anything else).

Falling down is saved to three or four times a year (St. Pat's, Cinco de Mayo, Helloween, Christmas/Thanksgiving). Typically I take a few weeks off altogether during the year (6-12 weeks at a time) where all I have is a cigar or three on the weekends. I feel much sharper (both mentally and physically) but being out and about grates on my nerves since I am that much more cognizant of the drunk idiots around me.

Follow Madcow2's advice. Only worry if your drinking affects your ability to eat and sleep properly.

I really wish 5-6 drinks was enough to get me hammered. hahaha. more like 15-20 here. i don't really drink though. I personally found it took a lot out of me -- i was usually really tired the next day and whatnot, couldnt' work out as well. and when training natrually, i believe it really can cause a drop in testosterone levels.

I drink often, ~3x a week, usually always 8+ drinks (college life)...

What I have noticed is that if I wait until late afternoon to lift the day after a binge, I actually have a really good workout. Don't know if it is the rest, or how I use the whole day to pysche myself up for the w/o, but I always have a good session.. wierd.
