my dog turned on me tonight. To give you some background, I have had him since he was 12 weeks. Whenever he does something wrong I yell at him. Tonight he was trying to steal a bone from the other dog and lori tried stopping him, he growled at her. So I came in there, picked him up and put him down on the ground. While I was picking him up he was snarling and snapping at me, which he has down before and never really went any further than that. This time though, when he was on the ground, I was pointing and yelling at him and he bit me on the chin (deep gash to).
I dont know what to do. I dont want a dog that will turn on me in a second. Why would he do this? How do you disicipline a dog? He is a boxer by the way.

I had a black lab that turned on me while I was training him. I had him on a leash thank goodness.

He turned on me (we were outside) and I immediately pulled the leash over a set of monkey bars in the backyard and pulled him off his feet and hung him. I left him there for about 10 seconds and then let him back down. He never did it again.

I know it seems mean but you have let him know he can't do things like that.

Let all the animal crusaders bash me now.

not bashing ya, cause you rule, but I was always taught that you are not supposed to train them that way. Who knows. I think I might call the vet or some animal "whisperer" or something to find out what the fuck happend. Did you keep the lab. I am freaked out now cause I dont know if he is going to turn on me anymore.

Im not sure how old your dog is but it sounds like he's not sure who the alpha-male is, and if he does he may think he should be instead, I would kind of view it like a pack of gorilla's, you always have a leader but he always gets challenged from time to time, you need to make your dog understand who is in charge, usually after a couple harsh punishments he'll figure it out rather quickly, make him work to please his master, disapline!

I kept him for a very long time. He was probably the best dog I have ever owned. He was extremely smart and very obedient.

I trained him as a hunting dog and he would retrieve every single time I took him with me. Had many a nice mornings sitting in my boat with him beside me waiting for the ducks to fly.

He was an awesome companion. Never had another problem with him after that one little incident.

A long time ago, I was friends with a dog trainer that trained dobermans. I watched him many times train them and one of them turned on him as I watched.

We were in the backyard at his house and he slung the leash over his swingset and hung the doberman way longer than I did. I got real upset watching it.

He owned some of the finest dobermans I have ever seen. Obedient to the hilt.

I guess different things work for different people but that seemed to work for him and myself.

I am into dachshunds now and really never have a problem with them. They are just great dogs.

trying to think what dachshunds look like. Sounds like you had an awesome dog though. I did not have a leash though. I am going to call the trainer tomorow and see what the fuck I can do.

Weiner dog....lol

I breed pits and ill say this...Dog like to work up the line to be the leader of the pack being in charge of the house..If there let too boss around the other dog soon it will be the kid and so on till its got the run of the house kind of like a pack of dog..This doesnt seem to be the case, i think it was more over you geting in between the two dogs argueing..So you to basically stepped into a dogs fight and the dog didnt like that! Mine fight to but the oldest keeps the young one in line if i yell at it she will go over to it and tell it in the dogs why...Not a bite but bulling it to let it know not to do it anymore..So i think if you just stay out of the 2 dogs problems (fighting over food bones ect) and just deal with if its people related you will be fine! But picking up a pissed off dog is not smart at all thats why you got snaped at! Try running it off of making it go lay down somewere..You never break up a dog fight and never pick up a pissed off dog most dont like being picked up anyways..GL

If it happens again, time to skewer the dog and have a BBQ. If there's one thing I love it's freshly cooked dog meat. One of the few things on this planet that I find worthy of eating is dog meat, second only to human flesh. That's some tasty shit right there.

MMM MMM Good.

Haha, when I saw the plat preview of this thread I totally mis-read the first line. I thought you wrote that your dog turned you on tonight, not that he turned on you. LOL.

In a muerto magazine
Filled with hate you hope to ween
Fight the beast and leave the cream
Leave the scene It's so easy to be the latest atrocity
But it always seems to be a penis that I see

If my dogs ever growled at me I would beat the piss out of them. You can not let a dog walk all over you.

You two are having a power struggle and your dog needs to learn who's the boss. A professional obedience class might REALLY help you establish that relationship. There was a boxer in my last obedience class that acted a lot like that. But a pronged training (some people call them choke chains but they only choke if put on wrong) collar with GOOD instruction you'll be floored by the difference.

My dog is just under 8 pounds and he has always had dominance issues. Get your dog on his/her back every night. Hold them down by the chest and be over them with eye contact. Not threatening. Just firm. And don't let go until they 100% stop struggling. Do it for as many days as it takes. Also take the dog's food/toys away for no reason and praise them when they give stuff up to you. It's not all about yelling. The dog needs to know that it's YOUR stuff and they get to play with it on YOUR terms.

One exercise you can do to deal with that is to play with the dog with either a big stuffed animal or a big tug. When they dog's really pulling and you decide you want it to give it to you, say give. Don't play. Don't make it fun. Give means give. Usually a finger to the back corner of their mouth will make them release. Lots of praise.

You can make all of this stuff into a game. A dog is happy to be a follower and be obedient to you if you CLEARLY define yourself as pack leader. :)
