Long Term Downsides To Training

I know a lot of the benefits of weight training. What I was thinking of particularly was powerlifting. It may be awhile (or even forever) before I break some really monsterous numbers, but after years of lifting like this, wouldn't the joints/tendons/ligaments be put at risk for injury? I know you'd periodize, but even with that, eventually wouldn't you wear down too much? Or could this go on for 40+ years so long as diet and nutrition is taken care of (along with an adequate periodized plan)?

There are lots of lifters who continue to powerlift in their 40-60's today...today more than ever before.

Odd Haugden has beaten me badly in my 2 Pro contests so far...and he is in his 50's.

Powerlifters don't train for 1RM's all the time. So many things go into being good in the powerlifts than just going heavy on the exercise. I'd venture to say that a bodybuilder will have a MUCH shorter training life than a strength athlete.
