Logic Problem! Help!

PHATchik

Studio Gangsta
Joe's girlfriend Jill lives at one end of town. His mother lives at the other. Joe gets off work at a random time between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. He is hungry so he goes to either Jill's or his mother by train. Trains in both directions follow a perfect 10 minute departure schedule.

Mom complains. She tells Joe that he has been to Jill's 80 out of the last 100 evenings. He says it was by chance. She says no way.

What is going on?

Hint: It could have gone 90 visits with Mom and 10 with Jill.

It's for a friend's Calculus class, and we have no clue what we are supposed to figure out. Any clues?

first of all, who is this joe guy? im 'totally' bigger than him right? :D

and secondly

does joe's mum put out? i assume not, but i've seen one too many episodes of springer to ruleit out. therefore, jill is a much more attractive 'recepticle' for joes matures spermatazoa

that or he feels the strength of his relationship with his mum allows it to be strained as it is so strong. i thing the foremer is much better though :D

try plotting a graph of train times over the period against the frequency of visits and the times of visits for the 80/20 then the 90/10 visit ratio's and look for a pattern?

sorry, i didnt do higher maths.....i wanted to play with bodies and stuff :D

ungrateful witch :D

It is really quite simple.

He goes to Jill's because she is serving desert with her dinner.:p :p

Besides, if his mother was serving desert, that would probably be covered in abnormal psychology. :insane::D

a happyscrappy train of thought look at it...

this is slightly unfair because the girl likely puts out, and the only time the mom would likely see him is while the girl is on the rag and not putting out.
so there should be a biased weighting in there based on her cycle.

but ignoring that, Joe has a 1 in 60 chance of getting off at any given part in that hour.
then it seems from there you need more information.
otherwise, the decision of which direction to go needs to be made.
if that is random, then that is a 1 in 2 chance either way.
but then there would be no reason to denote the 10 min schedule of the trains - so I am assuming that they are saying that the first train goes one way, then after 10 mins, the next train goes the other way.
which makes more sense.

from there you should be able to work out the probabilities... I have kids at the door...

Precisely...no need to bring math into the equation

Remember kids....Sesame Street has been brought to you by the letter Y and the number 69
