Hey fellow jellyfish,
On saturday morning, me and my friend went to a local public car auction near harbor blvd in anaheim. He wanted to buy a good car at a good price -- and i suggested we go check it out.
So we went. Lots of good cars. Most were <5 years old and none were older than 10. Most were in good shape. You basically can check out the cars up-close before 12pm; after which, bidding starts afterwards. They drive the car up ... so you know it's at least "working".
All i can say is WOW. There were cars there worth at least $10g's going for $5k and STILL not being bid on! Mercedes and BMW's were being offered from $10-15k. Most cars were 80k clicks and less. The american cars were pretty much being ignored. I saw a $40k Escalade (definately repo'd from a dealer judging by it's appearance) going for $17k.
The place wasn't that packed. I'd say maybe 80 people. Most were hispanic and on limited budgets. So most cars went for $2-$5k. But the sheer plethora of amazing bargains (20-50% off what you'd pay LOWEST on ebay) was amazing.
My friend picked up a dazzler -- and when he went home -- Discovered that he paid HALF of the BEST bargain he could find online. That's thousands that go into his "beer fund" instead of someone elses "beer fund".
The transaction works by dropping a $500 deposit, and paying it fully within 24 hours in cash. Also paying a 15% auction and tax fee. Of course all cars are "as-is" (hence why older cars are bid on less).
Why more people don't know about these great auctions (including lucrative estate sales) -- i have no idea.
