Liver Helper Myth Destroyed

Fonz

I would like to thank you for this interesting and informative thread, and for your personal consultation with me on this issue. As you know, I have to be very careful about my liver. While I'll still be gobbling down standardized silymarin, this is indeed quality information.

Good debate boys. Personally, I don't use milk thistle as I could never find how in the hell it protects against 17aa. If you've used ALA, then you definitely notice a much better feeling while on 17aa than with anything else.

Fonz, you don't know jack shit. Milk thistle does protect the liver because it forms a protective coating around the liver cells preventing any toxins or harmful drugs from entering the cell and causing damage. It also regenerates new liver cells. I've been on 2000+ mg of juice for 3 months and my liver enzymes were normal, and I've been juicing for 10 yrs. And you tell me it doesn't do anything? Studies have shown that it does!!! Maybe you should learn some more

Fonz, the abstract you posted relating to milk thistle is very narrow. I've posted several that clearly demonstrate milk thistle positive theraputic value, in humans, at realistic doses. Several of these define clear cut evidence of milk thistle's parmacokinetics and mechanism of action being entirely different <* see below> than ALA.

dif·fer·ent (dfr-nt, dfrnt)
adj.
1. Unlike in form, quality, amount, or nature; dissimilar: took different approaches to the problem.
2. Distinct or separate: That's a different issue altogether.
3. Various or assorted: interviewed different members of the community.
4. Differing from all others; unusual: a different point of view.

I feel like a broken record. Again, I have yet to see any evidence to support your opinions on the value, or lack thereof, regarding milk thistle.

BTW, you posted this...

Not trying to be redundant here, but how has the "myth" been dismounted. I've seen nothing but a stated opinion regarding the milk thistle "myth."

Don't start because I'm cranky. MT sucks. PERIOD.
You've just been indoctrinated for too long.

Just letting you know, when I saw your original post in this thread, I sought out evidence supporting your claim. My intent was to do just that - support your claim. However, I found no evidence whatsoever with which to do so, only evidence refuting it. I've already said I have nothing to gain by arguing for the value of milk thistle. I do however have much to gain by seeking truth rather than indulging in unsubstantiated opinion.

If nothing else, I have to give fonz credit for starting a very interesting thread that has caused many of us to evaluate our liver supps. Unfortunately quoting a few rat studies that are not to the point do nothing to prove or disprove anything. It is one thing to spout off invectives and declare a supp crap, it is quite another to actually demonstrate it. I'd like to think that we can use science appropriately here rather than shout opinions! C'mon fonz, calm down and respond to the several posts that ask reasonable questions. I, like others, have a vested interest in finding and using the most effective liver supps.

Link doesn't work properly. You will have to type "milk thistle" in search window on the top of the PubMed's page.
