Lettuce: Answer my argument guys

One of my friends was trying to tell me that Lettuce is basically equivalent to eating water. He was told by a few people that it basically has no nutritional value whatsoever and has no real benefit diet-wise for its consumption. I argued but I need some hard facts to back it up. What good does lettuce do?

It's green, it has to be good for you right?

So is guacamole. Hardly a convincing argument. But, lettuce is a veggie, so it has some fiber, it's low-glycemic, and it has small amt's of carbs for the amounts people eat. So, sure, it's good for you.

Depends on the type of lettuce.

Iceberg lettuce is basically cellulose and water, with tiny amounts of potassium and a few vitamins, which you can tell by looking at it - it's semi transparent and colorless, how nutritious could it be? Greener, opaque lettuces such as romaine (not the hearts!) are considerably richer in vitamins and minerals. A good rule of thumb with veggies is the brighter the color, the more vitamins they have.

I use lettuce mainly for it's space-occupying effect in my stomach. My last meal of the day is often grilled chicken breast on top of a SHITLOAD of lettuce. Nutrionally it's like just eating a chicken breast alone, but satiates me much more than would a solo breast. I guess I use lettuce as an all-natural type of Dexatrim.

It could not be equivalent to eating water, for it has nutrition facts:

Nutrition Facts

Amount Per 1 cup, shredded or chopped
Calories 6.6
Calories from Fat 0.941

% Daily Value *

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Total Fat 0.105g 0%

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturated Fat 0.0138g 0%

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Polyunsaturated Fat 0.055g

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Monounsaturated Fat 0.00385g

Sodium 4.95mg 0%

Total Carbohydrate 1.15g 0%

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dietary Fiber 0.77g 3%

Protein 0.556g 1%

--> It does have a benefit from a fiber standpoint. Show him the fact that 1 cup of lettuce contains almost 1g fiber, which will amount to lower cholesterol, less hypertension, better digestion.
