OK My bro is getting interviewed for UPS in the IT department. They told him it's a security position, described it as internet, firewalls, etc.. I have no idea what that means and apparently he does'nt either because he asked me "What's a firewall?" He has no experience in that but has worked in telecom field before. They told him if he did telecom, then this should be easy for him after a little instruction.

So what is the job description for something like that or Is that too general of a question?

and can someone "off the street" handle that kind of work without a computer background?

I'll try.. I work in IT as well.
 
sorry bro it timed out.

a firewall is just a piece of software or hardware the prevents incoming internet traffic. Blocks specific ports that hackers exploit and things like that. Basically protects your machine or network from outside traffic.

If he has experience in Telecom he could probably work his resume up and get the job. All the IT stuff is constantly changing, so its not neccsarily about what you know how, but your aptitude to learn and adapt. Having some job experience in a support role and in a corporation would help.

Someone off the street cannot do that job. I would never hire anyone for that type of position unless they had some experience or at least certification.
 
certifications suck.. experience, yes, but telcom is telecom.. covers everything from old school hard wires to wireless stuff now.

I wouldn't say he was a shoe in or a strong candidate, but with the right resume and a good interview, he has a shot.
 
whatever he does though, don't say "what is a firewall?"
