I have a minor in Spanish but college has been so long ago and I never was fluent. The problem where I live is we have almost no latinos to practice with. I had sort of a conversation with a Columbian in espanol the last time I was in Miami. We got as far as telling each other where we were from and I told him I knew someone from Bogota. After that I really didn't understand what he was saying.

If you're going to learn it you need to start out with a few semesters at least of book learning to get the basics. After that, if you are around native speakers you should start to pick it up. You'll be asking people to slow down (despacio por favor) a lot but I would guess you'll catch on quickly.

go to spain or mexico and live for a couple months, you'll start to pick it up right quick, if not take a class and learn the basics, it takes a whole lot of speaking and listening, getting used to it... I'm in France in full immersion courses right now, fuck, it's crazy, i dream in french.. Anyways, there's some programs you can buy for like 20 bucks that garentee to learn, mostly by listening and memorization, then you just have to get used to how quickly they speak. This is my 3rd language I'm learning, and I go back and take German in August. Spanish, Italian, French, and German. Italian isn't so great, and Spanish I took for 2 years, 5 years ago in High School, but I use it every now and then. Great shit for helping you get jobs.

the Pimsleur Comprehensive Spanish lessons are awesome. the problem is, they cost upwards of $250...per set. (3 sets total)

Unless you know someone who owns all 3 and is willing to burn you a copy...ahem.

i need to practice my spanish too, i was reading some of EF"s spanish forum for a little bit, as well as watching some spanish telenovelas

LMAO... this thread is quite entertaining...

as with any other language, get yourself an spanish-enabled girlefriend... you will learn in no time, much better than any course

Get out of the comfort zone.

I picked mine up from "Spanish Made Simple" in a couple of months. My pronunciation was a joke, though, so I turned to tapes for a little while at the local University language labs. A combination of the two should do the trick pretty quickly. Once you've reached a basic level of fluency, it's about getting the practice in with native speakers. Reading can help and there are radio stations in Spanish.
