MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A state lawmaker, worried about a recent string of deadly school shootings, suggested arming teachers, principals and other school personnel as a safety measure and a deterrent.

It might not be politically correct, but it has worked effectively in other countries, Republican Rep. Frank Lasee said Wednesday.

"To make our schools safe for our students to learn, all options should be on the table," he said. "Israel and Thailand have well-trained teachers carrying weapons and keeping their children safe from harm. It can work in Wisconsin."

In Thailand, where officials have been waging a bloody fight with Muslim separatists for the last two years, some teachers carry weapons for self defense as they are viewed as part of the government. In Israel, teachers are not allowed to carry weapons in the school, but security guards at the entrances are armed.

Lasee said he planned to introduce legislation that would allow school personnel to carry concealed weapons. He stressed that it would hinge on school staff members getting strict training on the use of the weapons, and he acknowledged he would have to work around a federal law that bans guns on school grounds.

The director of school safety for Milwaukee Public Schools, Pete Pochowski, opposed the idea.

"Statistically, the safest place for a child to be is in school," Pochowski said. "We have problems in our schools, but not to the point where we need to arm our teachers and principals."

Last week, a 15-year-old Wisconsin student was arrested in the shooting death of Weston Schools Principal John Klang. The criminal complaint said the teen brought guns to school to confront students, teachers and the principal.

i don't know what the right answer is. but i'll tell you this, i sure am glad my teachers didn't have guns when i was in school or i'd a been capped a long time ago....

LOL me too. Especially my science teacher from India. He would have opened fire on me and a couple of friends.

As far as the guns yea they should it is getting bad.

I don't see how this could really work though. Will they force teachers to take an intensive firearm and anit terrorism training course? A concealed weapons permit is very different from having to use deadly force in a hostage situation or siege. How many teachers could actually do something like this? Maybe only one that I had, aside from when I was in Valley Forge Military Academy.

Not many because the repercussions and possible jail time loom in the back of their minds.

With the way the judicial system works probably 99% of the teacher shootings would not be justified and charges would be filed.

While armed teachers sounds good in other countries and might look good on paper, sadly, it would not work here.

We already have police officers in schools here but I think we need more of a police presence in those schools.

Yeah. Somehow they'd make the crazy kids with assault rifles the victims in these cases.

Yeah ok. Teachers are sick enough to screw their students yet they would never crack enough to pull the trigger?
Bad idea!

I know it, but still. Teachers should not have weapons. How about better security in the school system?!

That's the only thing that makes sense to me. Of course, to pay for it the kids' quality of education will suffer.

People. Teachers and administrators walking around our institutions of learning packing iron? Are you kidding me? What a wonderful way to foster a positive learning environment.

That would cause more problems than solve problems. I think it would also drive several of the precious few teachers in the business out. Of course if they included combat pay, it might actually increase the stay & uptake rate.

they could change p.e to an m.m.a class.

eff this badmitten or jumping rope!
teach the kids how to protect themselves and think quickly in dangerous situations.

i would even volunteer my mixed martial art skills to local 18 year old hotties. i'd probabbly get my ass kicked by most of them by the end of the semeseter..but, if one young lady learned a valuable lesson, it would be woth it.

now, who wants to roll?

That's possibly the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. Our schools are really not as violent as some people would want you to believe. Think about the message that would be sent to the children. Can you imagine a first grade teacher packing heat during class?
