Law Suit on Cialis

Bad news in this AM's WSJ. Pfizer was awarded a patent on the way Viagra works and has sued LIlly & Icos who are developing Cialis and Bayer and Glaxco who are developing Levitra , asking that they not be allowed to sell these products as they violate the Viagra patent. Both companies say they will fight.

Greedy bastards those pharmacuetical companies are! These type of tactics do not help the patients who could be benifiting from the drug. Viagra manufactures want to maintain a monopoly and charge a rediculous amount for their product.

Yes, but they only sell it at high prices becuase people pay for it. When cars were not selling they had to do 0% financing otherwise people would not buy them. That is a great thing about our market. If a cell phone was a $1k, not many would buy them or the service so they drive it down.

The drugs are a different story that most people don't understand. They file patents on the drugs when they get to Phase II or Phase III clinical trials. They have 17 years I think on the patent and it will usually take another 4-8 years to get FDA approval. Some drugs fail at the latest stages and are doomed and those are extra costs that other drugs must carry.

If there is no reward for the drug companies, there would be no new drugs. If you think it is overpriced, just don't buy it.

Well I thought Cialis was working on a different way than Viagra ? Anyway, comapred to Cialis, viagra is shit. Nothing but side effects. Pfizer realized that and their only response was this law suit. Pathetic.

Well put Racer.

A lot of people have a difficult time understanding the power of capitalism. Investors (i.e. Money) follows the greatest return on investment. Without the high prices, and ROI, of a few block-buster drugs, the big pharmaceutical companies would be unable to support their enormous research budgets. Minus these budgets, research stops and nobody benefits from the tremendous suite of drugs set to launch over the next decade.

Understanding Capitalism?

I personally don't think capitalism is difficult to grasp at all. However, when "capitalism" interferes with the improvement of pharmaceutical treatment, aka "health care" there is something wrong with the picture. Capitalism is intended to spur technological advancement, and access to health care should be available to everyone. I don't think we can view the health care system as any other industry, IMO.

I don't think that it will matter in terms of them actually winning.

the mechanism by which they work is different - the only thing they could go after is if they have a patent specifically on any drug that helps with erections, and even then, those are frequently getting overturned.

companies are always suing each other to no avail - they have legal teams dedicated just to that end.

just because there is a lawsuit doesn't mean that 1) anything will come of it, or 2) that anything will happen soon.
