Hello Rick,

I was looking for as straight forward an answer on this topic, and have not really found one as of yet... I am hoping you could help.

Q: If you are/were going into any branch of "law Enforcement,"... say, in this case D.O.C., (Dept. Of Corrections/ NJ)and you wanted/ were to take steroids, with having provided a "legal prescription" from your doctor (having made a visit, done the bloodwork, ect..) to do so, could you run into any serious problems that would lead you to untimately get fired? All this, regardless of the fact for having a legal prescription for using them, could there still be any problems? Keeping in mind all the time though, you have a level head and do not get into any trouble, and do your job well. Could having a legal U.S. Rx script for this medication this safeguard you, or even with a legit prescription, it still did not matter? I just do not want to get into trouble, or sacrifice the job. It would be nice to stay on hormone therapy, keep my body in shape, taken in moderation, I do know what bennefits it does have keeping you strong and healthy.

Thank you beforehand for your help.

Sincerely,

BT

PROBABLY NOT, AS LONG AS THE DOC HAS A LEGITIMATE MEDICAL REASON FOR PRESCRIBING. TECHNICALLY, YOUR DOC MUST HAVE EVIDENCE THAT YOU SUFFER FROM A BONAFIDE DISEASE, INJURY, ETC. IN FLORIDA, SOME DOCS GOT INTO TROUBLE BY OVER- AND IMPROPERLY PRESCRIBING OXYCONTIN AND OTHER NARCOTICS. IN THIS CASE, THE PRESCRIPTIONS WERE CONSIDERED INVALID. AS LONG AS YOU STAY BELOW THE RADAR, YOU SHOULD BE OK. ATHLETES, THOSE TESTED FOR AAS WOULD BE CONSIDERED ABOVE THE RADAR AND BETTER BE PREPARED WITH DOCUMENTATION TO BACK UP A DIAGNOSIS OF HYPOGONADISM (FOR EXAMPLE).

All this, regardless of the fact for having a legal prescription for using them, could there still be any problems? Keeping in mind all the time though, you have a level head and do not get into any trouble, and do your job well. BY DEFINITION, A "LEGAL" (VALID) PRESCRIPTION IS BASED ON EVIDENCE OF A BONAFIDE DISEASE, CONDITION OR INJURY. I AM SURE THAT MANY DOCS WRITE SCRIPTS FOR FRIENDS, FAMILY AND PATIENTS FOR "ELECTIVE" THINGS. TROUBLE STARTS WHEN THE PATIENTS/FRIENDS/FAMILY DIE OR COMPLAIN. OR THEY ARE ATHLETES OR TESTED FOR AAS ON THE JOB.

A PRESCRIPTION IS AN ORDER TO A PHARMACIST, FROM A LICENSED DOCTOR, TO DISPENSE MEDICATION. A DEA-CERTIFICATE IS REQUIRED OF BOTH PARTIES IF DEA CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES ARE BEING PRESCRIBED AND DISPENSED. THE ROLE OF THE DOCTOR IS TO DIAGNOSE AND TREAT. IT IS ASSUMED THAT THE DOC PRESCRIBES FOR A REASON. IT IS THE PHARMACIST'S JOB TO RECHECK FOR DRUG INTERACTIONS, MAKE SURE THE DRUG IS PROPERLY DISPENSED, MAKE SURE THE DRUG IS BEING PROPERLY USED, AND BASICALLY ENSURE THE VALIDITY OF THE PRESCRIPTION. THERE ARE STATE AND FEDERAL LAWS THAT DETERMINE ALL OF THIS. THE DOCTOR/PHARMACIST RELATIONSHIP IS VERY IMPORTANT TO THE SAFEGUARDING OF THE SYSTEM AND TO PROTECT PATIENTS--FROM THEMSELVES AND FROM ERRORS. THE PRESCRIPTION IS NOT A GOLD CARD TO BE FLASHED ABOUT, FOR IT CAN BE DECLARED INVALID UPON INVESTIGATION. PRESCRIPTIONS THEMSELVES EXPIRE--SIX MONTHS USUALLY. SO, THERE ARE RULES AND REGS TO FOLLOW.
