laptops for college

Im debating on if i should get a laptop for school. Is it worth it? Do you or know ppl that use them for class? and does it help? Are there laptops out there that are at least faster than 56k? Cause i know they are slower than desktops but can you get ones near the speed of cable? Obviously im no techie and id like some input on a good laptop for school, library and work (i can do my homework at work).

The computer has nothing to deal with the internet speed. That all depends on the modem you're running through. A laptop on 56k is just as slow as desktop on 56k. Most laptops don't have the same processor speeds as desktops, that's probably what you're trying to say. If you're looking for a laptop with a great processor try a dell inspiron. I think they start at 1ghZ pentium III's. They're pretty expensive though.

Most of my friends in college have a laptop. Like WormAAA77 said, the modem determines the speed of your internet connection. If you're going to a decent sized university, they probably have a lan that you can connect to in your dorm room which is just as fast if not faster that a cable modem (AT TIMES). Dell Inspiron's kick ass but are pretty expensive but I would stay with dell though

No. bad idea. You and your buddies will be trashed like 4 - 5 nights a week and the shit will get dropped / broken / shit spilled on it.

I go to a night school, and I love it because all of my programming classes that I have, I just install the software on my laptop, and dont use the pc's that are at school so I can continue to pick up where I left off in class. I also use it in my other classes to take notes, and create powerpoint presentations etc. I would highly recommend one.

I bought one this semester (my last). It made a huge difference. Was able to do work anywhere, between classes, in library, at girlfriends. I had to buy one to get all the work I had to do done. I wish I woulda had one a couple years ago. It really helped. And everyone is right about modem. Mine is 56k, but my school has DSL run, so I couldn't use it there.

My laptop is a Compaq 800mb/hz, 10 gig harddrive, DVD/CD drive. I got it for 749 plus another 150 3 year unlimited warranty. I had it on plane to Baltimore this week and was played Quake III the whole way there and back. I didn't install game until I finished school.

I would say yes if you actually think that you would use it. Most people I know where jealous and wanted one also

This is mostly for me to take notes and use the internet during class for needed info...some say that taking notes with a laptop is not good, you agree?

If you have the Internet during class, you'll quickly get bored by the prof and start surfing. trust me on that.

Plus if you were in my class typing away and I was actually trying to listen, I'd be upset. Others will feel the same way I am sure.

A desktop is fine - in your room.

Does your classes have internet hookups? And no I wouldn't recommend that. Notes, not really either, ussually not as easy. As far as doing reports, projects, presentations, surfing on the side yes.

you can probably get an old laptop with 10GB HD & 250Mhz CPU for around $250-350 instead of a $1000 800Mhz Dell.

its probably better you get a slower laptop. that way even if you want to use it to play games you won't be able to.

i can surf the net & write fine on a 400Mhz processor.
