Laptop vs Desktop computers

Do you think desktops will ever become obsolete as laptops become more powerful/functionable, or will there always be practical or more specific uses for them? It seems everything is downsizing and is making me wonder whether I should rebuild a killer pc rig or just get a Mac Powerbook. Other than gaming, are there any advantages a desktop pc has over laptops that would hold true some time in the future as well?

Thanks for any input.

Desktops will always be around.

Unless you want portability, get a desktop. Obviously desktops completely fucking suck if you have to take it places.

I didn't know they still made them, are they in the 8 track section?

I have a phone that has a fast ass processor in it and memory is no problem. Desktops are done, mainly because workstations are all going server based stations so there is no need for the tower for performance.

My good bro says laptops are the way to go (Macs) and will never get a desktop again. He just hooks his Powerbook up to a widescreen monitor w/ speakers, printer, etc.
Makes the argument viable that there are no advantages to a desktop, besides perhaps gaming, which I'd rather do on a console.

Price / Performance is the best arguement for a desktop for your average consumer.

Talk about a power user, I could go on all night as to the advantages.

Yeah I know Macs are good for photo/video editing but pc's still have a power edge, which never hurts for any application. Of course they also consume more power but that's another story.

the true demand that most users need can be met by laptops already and will for sure be met in the future. The few true power users that need a tower probably need more than just a personal tower and need to go with a larger system as a whole. As for price, this is america and since when do we let price affect our actions when it comes to mobility? This is all just imo though.
