L-Carnitine L-tartrate supplementation favorably affects markers of recovery from exercise stress

Jeff S. Volek1, William J. Kraemer1, Martyn R. Rubin1, Ana L. Gómez1, Nicholas A. Ratamess1, and Paula Gaynor2

1 Human Performance Laboratory, University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut 06269;

We examined the influence of L-carnitine L-tartrate (LCLT) on markers of purine catabolism, free radical formation, and muscle tissue disruption after squat exercise. With the use of a balanced, crossover design (1 wk washout), 10 resistance-trained men consumed a placebo or LCLT supplement (2 g L-carnitine/day) for 3 wk before obtaining blood samples on six consecutive days (D1 to D6).

Blood was also sampled before and after a squat protocol (5 sets, 15-20 repetitions) on D2. Muscle tissue disruption at the midthigh was assessed using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) before exercise and on D3 and D6. Exercise-induced increases in plasma markers of purine catabolism (hypoxanthine, xanthine oxidase, and serum uric acid) and circulating cytosolic proteins (myoglobin, fatty acid-binding protein, and creatine kinase) were significantly (P 0.05) attenuated by LCLT. Exercise-induced increases in plasma malondialdehyde returned to resting values sooner during LCLT compared with placebo.

The amount of muscle disruption from MRI scans during LCLT was 41-45% of the placebo area. These data indicate that LCLT supplementation is effective in assisting recovery from high-repetition squat exercise.

L-Carnitine only works as a fat burner if you are deficient in that amino acid. If you're eating enough protein you shouldn't encounter this problem, and supplementation would be useless for fat burning purposes.

Killerdice, great article. Only problem i have w/ all these amino's and what they do is they all seem essential. There's tons of articles on Arginine, Lysine, BCAA's, Glutamine, and it makes you want to go buy them all seperately lol.

I here that Risky,,

I want to buy everything that works,,, I have a freaking small lab going right now looks like a mad scientist in my kitchen,, god only knows how much I have spent latley on supps and others... What I have now is working,, just need to be happy with what i got.. But I always want more,, just a little of this or that or a lot of this or that ads up to a lot of $$$.. Going to have to find a second job soon to pay for my bodybuilding supplies....lol

Bro believe me... I was in your shoes for a while. I finally gave it up. I've read countless articles on this amino, the other, etc etc etc. I did all kinds of experiments on them as well and came to the conclusion that I was really wasting a lot of money on this crap and seeing very little return physically speaking. Now I just focus more on essentials and save my money for something that actually works, which in my case is the 1AD. No amino acid ever put 1 more pound of muscle in my body... That's why I stopped all that crap. What i do use in this case for the aminos is a good ol' whey shake that will fill you up w/ all the aminos you need and stopped buying seperate stuff.
good luck.... and eh.. save your $ lol
