L-Arginine

I was reading through a couple books and doing some research when I came across an article on Arginine and I thought I would post it and get your thoughts on it.
Arginine at 6000-12000mg/Day is an effective amino acid that should merit top consideration by all body builders. Arginine is an essential amino acid nessasary for protein synthasis. It works by stimulating the release of prolactin, glucagon, insulin and Growth hormone. The body uses Arginine as a base for making nitric oxide, a chemicle that relaxes the muscles in the walls of the arteries and thereby increases blood flow and tissue oxygenation. Arginine also has ammonia-reducing effects, and since ammonia levels increase with physical activity, body builders need to ensure it is removed from there system. Studies have show that Arginine improves immune reponce to bacteria, viruses and tumor cells and promotes wound healing and regeneration of the liver; it is considered crutial for optimal muscle growth and tissure repair. Arginine is a precursor for collagen synthasis, which is important for wound healing. It is also a precurser in creatine production.
After reading the article I was thinking of adding this Amino to my list of supps to take on and off a cycle and I was just wondering if any of you had any thoughts on it or use it ?

hell ya L-arginine is the shit buddy. it gives ya some nice boners too LOL. but you gotta make sure its
L-arginine hcl cause its alot better absorbed by the body. it dialates arteries and increased blood flow. its proven to help reduce plaque in arteries.

Well, I remember a few years ago when mega-doses of arginine were used to elicit growth hormone release. Along with ornithine, OKG, KIC, etc. Several life extensionists wrote about this, even Dr. Colgan of TwinLab fame wrote about it. But I think it was all theory, and even Colgan admitted as much.

I don't think anything ever came of it. None of the research was ever able to be duplicated by others (think 'cold fusion').

Plus, arginine ain't cheap. And if I want something that works and ain't cheap, I go with ox or winny.

Hey Stang, thought I'd chime in a bit about glucagon. It isn't what I'd call ideal for building muscle. It kind of has the opposite effect to insulin in that it increases blood glucose levels. It increases gluconeogenesis, i.e. break down of amino acids to form glucose. It also causes the break-down of glycogen into glucose. It is good for losing weight as it slightly increases the release of triglycerides from adipocytes as well. Just thought I'd share since it isn't like IGF-1 or Growth Hormone or anything. I don't know how much L-Arginine stimulates secretion of glucagon in relation to its effects on IGF-1 and GH secretion though. Hope that interests you at all.:)
