knee and bad posture questions

New person here...with 2 questions I couldn't find anywhere else. Maybe they are here, but I didn't see them.
First question:
I have arthritis in my knees (I am 47). The kind where its the cartildge is disintegrating. I take glucosamine/chrondroiton which helps alot.
Always had "bad" knees anyway...the left one easily goes sideways. I was a tour guide for awhile, used to climb 3 flights of stairs all day long, and had to wear a knee brace to make sure it wouldn't go out and make me fall. LIke it did once. (Fortunately, on the first flight, carpeted stairs there!)

I REALLY need to do squats and lunges for my butt and legs, they look terrible. But when I do, there is this pressure and it feels like my knees are brittle; like they could break. Maybe everybody's knees do this?
I don't want to make them worse, I can't afford new ones right now.

I am wondering if I should do them anyway because it strengthens them, wear a brace for that too or what. And then what kind? There were so many kinds at the athetic store.
I am not sure about these braces... how to tell a good one. I tried one on to make me stand up straight, and it didn't do a thing; I still had bad posture. So maybe these leg brace things are lame too. I even went to the medical supply and tried all of them on. They only had 3 kinds, but none of them worked. I need my shoulders to go back.
I think lifting will help out with posture though, never saw a buff person with bad posture before. I hope so. It looks like I have no confidence.

No matter what I don't seem to ever remember to stand up straight for more than 3 minutes. That is my second question...I want to stand up straighter...any particular things I ought to be focusing on exercise wise so it happens naturally? Its such a basic thing to look 100 times better.
