Kitty opinions please

Okay, now that I have your attention. I need to know what you all think about declawing cats. My family is planning on having it done to our cat, and I don't like the idea. Now don't get me wrong, I hate the cat and think he is the spawn of Satan, but I think it's cruel to do this to an animal. Anyone done this to their own animal? What kind of reaction did you get from the cat? Healing time, etc.

It is cruel. If you clip their nails it is also unnecessary.

Not a slam, but if people don't want an animal, don't get one.

i had a cat declawed before, probably wouldnt do it again becasue it was messed up for at least a week, but also i would NEVER have an indoor cat that wasnt declawed

He's been an indoors cat since he was just a kitten. As soon as he could be taken from his mother, my grandparents got him about a year ago. They won't put another animal outside simply because of what happened to our last cat....she got into antifreeze somehow. It was rough because it was really like losing a member of the family. This one (the spawn of Satan) has decided that my grandmother is a scratching post. He either claws the furniture or claws her, and she's tired of it. It would be just as cruel to put him outside after all this time.

Hamster, how do you mean messed up?

Is he an inside cat?

If so, there shouldn't be any problem. I wouldn't declaw an outside cat. Starfish had her cat declawed and they used a laser to do it.

As for "your" kitty question.

:licker: :kitty: :verygood:

<-----------he made me do it.

ya if you intend to keep it indoors for both your and the cats sake get it declawed...my roommates had his declawed and the cat was fine its mood wasn't very different. every now and then it was chew at the stiches but they dissolved eventually, i don't think it is inhumane it saves the owner and the cat a lot of trouble...if it is an outdoor cat, you have to leaves the claws on due to the fact that it wont survive without them, but if it is an outdoor cat it probably wont spend much time indoors anyway especially when the weather is nice.

My ex just declawed the front paws. You're supposed to exchange their litter for shredde paper after it so they don't get litter into any open wounds.

neither of our cats are declawed and we have no plans to declaw them. both indoor cats. they need a "defense" against the dogs when they start playing.

SOme cats never get over it....its the same as removing the first joint form your fingers...I wouldnt do it again.

I've been reading on the webpage that JerseyArt sent me. Damn, I didn't realize it was as complex as it is. :(

the cat had a hard time walking, and just was kinda of depressed i guess, after about a week she was fine, i just couldnt handle all of the couch scratching

It's basically cutting off part of the tendon, or joint, or something ... Whatever it is, it could take weeks for the cat to recover. WTF, so the cat doesn't scratch shit? Then don't get a cat.

No fucking way will I ever do that to a cat. It's a horrible procedure, IMO.

That is correct -- declawing is anatomically equivalent to clipping a human's fingers at the first knuckle. Vets in many other countries refuse to do it.

I bet they still do it in Vietnam..

Declawing a cat is the equivalent of removing a human's finger at the first knuckle.....the claws of a cat are an appendage, not just a unnecessary part....

If you declaw -- the cat WILL become a biter....

You CAN train a cat NOT to claw where you don't want them too.....give them a scratch post &/or pad....when they start to claw the couch, yell NO! & show them the post/pad.....

They also make for furniture clear sticky things that you tick on so they won't claw.....tinfoil will do the same thing....I would try behavioral modification B4 declawing....

Also -- cats will do things to DRAW attention --they don't differentiate between negative & positive attn -- to them it's all attention......

I knew it!

You CAN train a cat NOT to claw where you don't want them too.....
when they start to claw the couch, pull out a fly swatter and pop them up side the head & show them the size boots you are wearing.....

Not necessarily true

go to the pet store and get a product called Bitter Apple...spray it on hands etc that kitty want to attack...contains a methanol base which is harmless but yet repulsive...

hmmmmm

harmless but repulsive

lol

sounds like me on a computer dating ad

I'm not a big fan of declawing a cat..... BUT if you are going to do it, find a veternarian who specilaizes in laser declawing.

Declawing with a laser is EXTREMELY less traumatic on a cat and the healing time is quick.

I had my cat declawed last year when he hurt three of his claws in his pet carrier. He did more damage to his claws than the laser procedure.

He has not changed in the least. He is also not a biter. I have no idea where people are getting that from.

Simple solution put up a scratching post next to the prime area she likes to claw this will usually cure it, if the cat is stubborn as my first grab a squirt bottle of water and squirt it saying 'no! ' soon the cat will learn not to claw the furniture

The biting thing I only know cuz of people I know who had their cats declawed front & back ----> biter.....

So I guess it doesn't apply in all cases....i guess it depends on the cat...

My experience was the same as Jens. I had two cats which had both been declawed by a previous owner. Even she acknowldeged that the biting began after the declawing, as well as a more reclusive attitude for one of the cats, patches.

Lord, it's hard searching for a damn thread. I really wish this was my decision to make. None of my convincing seems to be very convincing, but isn't that how it always is? I'm going to print off some stuff to show my grandparents, so we'll see.

And thanks all for the advice. Yes, I knew what some of you would say without even posting, but I appreciate all tips, experiences, and advice. I'll let you know what happens.

Saw the title, and figured I would cut right to the chase without reading all of this bornig input. I think you should shave it. I prefer a shaved kitty any day. You'll get alot more oral from guys that way.

Yep, this is why I haven't launched Yahoo Messenger.

LoL Beleive it or not, I'm actually not as bad as my EF persona. :verygood:

I never bring up the topic of sex with a woman if she does not initiate it. EF does not count though. I come here to unwind and blow off a bit of stress.

Besides, you asked for that with the title of the thread... in an effort to get everyone's attention. It was simply a matter of time before someone said it.

Declawing cats? Those people should have their finger and toe nails ripped off to see what it feels like.

Now where are the kitty pics I came in this thread for?

So does that mean you can't rise above what is expected? Everyone else has.

i understand ....but thats like saying everyone should get there head chopped off if they eat chicken... we are the humans ...animals ,,allthough unfortunatly, are here for us to use...lazer declawing is a one day thing and relativly painless from what i understand...(what the vet told me...)i have two cats one is an appleheaded siamees (22lbs)and the other maincoon(12lbs.)...the maincoon was a stray and was real sketchy and even though he was like 10 lbs. lighter than the applehead , he allways cut him up...so i had him declawed.. now thier lovey dovey..the whole animal crulty thing has lost its bearing (as with most stuff now a days)....if your intentionaly hurting an animal your a piece of shit...

Cruel and unnecessary. Why would you ever do that? we are a cat family and have never ever had one declawed. its sick.
