Kids and chores

To all those with kids, or thinking about it, what do you consider fair and realistic? In this scenario..male single parent, two kids -girl-14, boy-10. What amount should they do to help out? WHat is reasonable? Should they get to do things and go out (movies, stores etc) with chores not finished?

When I was 9, I was washing the dishes...EVERY NIGHT. When I was 10, I was vacuuming and dusting. AT 11, my mother showed me how to sort laundry and how the washer and dryer worked and the proper way to hang clothing on a clothesline, fold and put them away. By 14 I was cooking meals.

What was your question again?

PS - What is an allowance? These were my household responsibilities because it was a privilige to live in my parents' home.....It was my dad's job to earn a living, my mom's job to take care of the finances, the household duties and the children, it was our job to do well in school and clean up....help our mom.

Thanks for the reply. Theres no mom her so it all falls on me. They each have 4 chores and get a buck per week per chore-they coud get more if they did more. An allowance is what they haven't been getting because they never do all thier chores consistently.......

yeah in 16 and i never had to wash the dishes, do the laundry, nothing... isn't life just great?? go to school, work out and have sex :D

Whizkid - are your parents asleep or what?? Of course I know guys who are 30 and can say the same thing (I'm not proud to know them....). All I can say is live it up while you have it , but have a plan for when they do wake up and you get the boot. Nobody does your laundry in the real world.

This is the kinda thing that bugs me. I couldnt deal with akid thats over age 12 that doesnt help out and at age 16 if they dont , I think I would send them back to their moms....

I was doing chores at age 12 then on top of that, I had my first JOB when I was 13 + the chores. So they should have to help out to make a family work.

Re

I have a 9 year old daughter. Soon she will be doing the dishes. I am building our new home now and should be completed in a couple months. Then she can start helping around the house.

gotta give them chores and you gotta make them do them. gives them responsibility and 90% of kids today dont have any. you dont want that
