KAZAA virus

Kazaa sucks elephant gonads.

Still, options are limited and Kazaa has a decent interface. I'm still running the old version of Kazaa. I was scared shitless it'd be like the crappy updated Morpheus or something similar so I'm not upgrading until I absolutely have to. Did they ever change Morpheus back to the old Kazaa-like interface or is it still the lame new one?

Rumor mill has it that record companies are going to start distributing MP3's of their own artists recordings. The catch being that the files will have "scratches" in them - making them annoying and useless to the file swapping genre.

Believe it, or not?

Doubt it. Clean versions would come out anyway. Sony spent millions trying to make copy resistant CD's and some guy found out you could use a 99 cent marker to defeat it (tracing around the first 1/4-1/2 inch or so, where the copy protection data is).

Not to mention there are programs like Mp3 Surgeon and others that allow you to cut and rearrange songs, so you could probably edit out the scratches anyway.

The record companies arent going to win against the pirates. As I said in another post, the only artists really hurt by Kazaa and other file-sharing programs are those artists who sell 50-400k albums. Major artists are already proven and have a loyal fan base. That alone can equal platinum records just by loyal fans.

Also, someone who is loyal to an artist is probably going to buy the CD anyway. I can download every one of Eminem's new songs, but I'll still end up buying the CD, like 3.9 million other people have so far. IMO, the whole "moving release date up 2 weeks due to piracy" was simply a marketing gimmick (albeit a good one).

I'd say that record companies wouldnt take the time and effort to release fucked up songs. More than likely they'll just try to beef up copy protection.
