A few thoughts...

This was one of the worst movies I've ever seen, probably top 5, and I've seen a lot of shitty movies.

Why do so many people think this movie is scary? It's fucking retarded, the first 45 minutes are completely pointless and should have been cut out. The whole exorcism parts are really hokey and lame. I had to control myself from busting out laughing at a number of scenes.

I want the last 2 hours of my life back.

try watching the sequal. i am not scared by scary movies, but part... 2 i think was really good.

I'll agree. The exorcist isnt' really that scary, but at the time it came out it was, it was one of those movies that pushed the limit back then, with the horror and the language. The second and third movies were a little better. I'm exicited about the new Exercist movie coming out.

My GF is wanting me to watch this movie.

I'm glad I read this thread first. Now I'll just suggest a porno instead.

Thanks.

Dude I thought it was porno? The green vomit and the girl banging herself with the cross were hottt!!

I've never seen this one, but I want to. And yes, it would probably scare the living hell out of me. That is why I will wait until I have some guy to grab onto for dear life.

In 1973 that WAS scary....

How???? All the so called "scary" parts were way too rediculous to possibly be scary. I mean just because she calls people cocksuckers, it's supposed to be scary? God, this movie was so dumb. The only way I could maybe see someone getting scared from this is if they were some kind of religious nutjob, like curling.

Uhh I think he was talkin' about the ORIGINAL movie... not the new one coming out soon.

your perception of movies and media and what's scary is different as a person in 2004 than the person of 1973.

Ever wonder how people could've been SCARED by the horror movies of 1920 or 1940?? We look at that now and laugh at how cheesy it is -- but then, women were running out of theatres screaming.

You have to put movies into perspective with the age of theatre that it played in.

Either way. I was 9 when i saw it, and it scared the bajeebers out of me.

Yeah, if I had seen that when I was 10 years old...I probably would have been scared. Why? Because I was an idiot. Now don't get me wrong, I like old horror movies. Dawn of the Dead and Night of the Living Dead are both classics. They're pretty stupid, but still enjoyable to watch. This movies just sucked, in fact it was irritating how stupid it was. I would have shut it off halfway through but I was watching it with friends.

Many people don't think it's scary... I personally liked it. But then again, people are FREAKED out w/ movies today like The Ring. Which was NOT scary to me at all. I guess it's how the movie affects you personally.

Nah, she's into scary movies and wants to go see the new one you are talking about, but I have never seen the original, so she's making me see it before we go to the new one. :)

Okay, thats not even the point though. I get what you're saying, the fact is... THIS MOVIE WAS FUCKNG STUPID!

I'm bumping this past "master of disguise" as worst movie ever. At least when I saw MoF I knew it would suck. Everyone I know raves about the Exorcist.

Bro in 1973, you'd be scared shitless from that movie.

Not if I was over 15 years old I wouldn't.

You guys need to stop falling back on the "ohhh it was scary a century ago" bullshit. This was a horrible movie, and there's no excuse for it.

i think that all Horror movies are stupid, but people dont go to see a horror movie and spect a oscar winning performance or movie or music(meaby except the shinning witch to me its still stupid with oscar and all)
they go just to see what all the fuzz is about and popcorn (sweet sweet buttery popcorn),
ur just crossing the line saying that exorcist is worst that Master of Disguise
at least u didnt say gigly or giggle or what ever the name wuz

Bor, you're only saying that because of the life you have been subjected to now.

If you were a citizen living in 1973, not having seen what you have seen now, you'd be scared.

If it helps, I wasnt scared of it either ...

Like I said before, I like horror movies. I'm not always about watching oscar caliber movies. I watched dawn of the dead just a week ago, (the original) and enjoyed it, regardless of the crappy dialogue and cheesy effects. But when you have a movie about a possessed girl and in these "possessed" scenes, she's screaming "fuck me! fuck me!" and calling people cocksuckers...I"m sorry, that's not scary, that's fucking hilarious. My friends were literally laughing their asses off at these scenes.

If this movie was such a "classic" it would withstand the test of time. I'm sorry, it didn't.

The Godfather, now that's a fucking classic. Also made around the same time as The Exorcist.

I don't think it was that scary but I do think it was a good movie and the
best of the catholic horror genre.

go watch Exorcist 3...that one was pretty scary. the gemini killer character is very evil. i'll probably be seeing the fourth one in the theater since the gf is pretty jacked up about it.

Does it have anything to do with a little possessed girl with a dirty mouth? If not, I'm sure it's way better than the first one.

Set 15 years after the events of the first film, The Exorcist III centers around Lt. Kinderman (George C. Scott). Kinderman is still trying to come to terms with the death of Father Karras (Jason Miller) when he is called to a mysterious case: people have been dying gruesome deaths. All bear the mark of the Gemini Killer (Brad Dourif), a notorious serial killer. Only one problem: the Gemini Killer is dead, having been executed 15 years ago.

After a discussion with Dr. Temple (Scott Wilson), head of the psychiatric ward, Kinderman discovers that a mysterious man was found wandering the beach the very same night of the original exorcism. And the man happens to have a startling resemblance to Father Karras. But he is possessed by the soul of the Gemini Killer…

Again, the guy who plays the man possessed by the gemini killer does a great job. He is super creepy.

yeah...Exorcist 3 had some pretty scary moments. Like that that possesed nurse/nun with the fucking 4-foot wide medical thingy majingy that decapitates.....

Excorcist 2 S_U_C_K_E_D !!!

yeah that part freaked me out the most. when she cruises across the screen with a sheet over her and holding those huge clippers. made me jump like a mofo in the theater

Lol ...proly not enough explosions or car chases. May I suggest you watch the movie Commando? It has more of what you want

yeah you can't beat the redone Texas Chainsaw Massacre. that movie will rock your face off. the simple fact that jessica biel is insanely hot in it and in a wet tank top half the movie was enough for me.

Probably not eough gore nor understanding of the implications of possession and the whole God Satan belief. In 1973 the country was still very grounded in Christianity, peoples faith had not been totally destroyed by people forcing ahteism, agnosticism, the muslim faith and so on down our throats.

People in this country have been re-educated into the belief that God/satan good and evil do not exist and have been re-educated into a visual acknowledgement of reality. In other words, what you see must be real not what you feel or believe.

I wonder how many people would actually be unerved by the Omen? Or Rosemary's Baby? There is no Jason or Michael or Freddy hacking people up with knives and claws. Just lots of candy blood splattering everywhere. What if you took all the gore out of a horror film and played upon someones faith and beliefs? Upon the very thing they hold dear that anchors them in this world. Forced them to examine the movie from within instead of from what they see.

Today the movie does the thinking for us. Even just 10 or 15 years ago, people still had to think somewhat to understand a movie. Movies like Seven for example. While the acting from Pitt wasn't all that great, the audience was forced to participate to understand the movie.

Anyway, the Exorcist is one of the best films around in the arena of pure fear.

Again, you assume I need tons of blood and guts to appreciate a movie, you're wrong. My point was that the whole movie was corny and rediculous. This movie probably would have scared the crap out of me when I was kid, simply because I was brought up in a strong christian home. Now, I no longer believe any of that hooey, so I found the movie to be quite stupid.

On a side note - I watched The Shawshank Redemption last night. Now that was an awesome movie. More than made up for the 2 hour suck-fest I witnessed the night before last.

strangebrew, name a horror movie that you thought was good.
not that i think the exorcist was that great, just curious what movies you have enjoyed from that genre.

The Shining, Silence of the lambs, Hannibal, Red Dragon, Se7en, Pyscho, The Others. Also recently watched 28 days later, not too bad for a zombie flick. "It" was cool as well.

agree on silence of the lams and red dragon (hated hannibal) seven and pyscho.
the others sucked, but what do i know i really liked the first blair witch project.
i also think the first amityville horror was a good old horror flick.

Actually I kinda liked the blair witch project too.

The last shot of Blair Witch still gives me goosebumps.

I wouldnt consider Red Dragon, Hannibal, or Se7en to be horror flicks.

Your last statement in reference to my post makes my point. You know longer hold the Christian God/Satan beliefs any more. Therefore, it would not be a particularly interesting nor scary movie.

28 days was terrible, Dawn of the Dead was better. Blair Witch was stupid. Shining was good.
