Hey guys, I been "playing working out" for a while, on and off... but now I want to start seriously.

I'm going to follow

http://www.eclipsegym.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=57

word per word just because I never done a 5x5, I'm gonna start and finish that guide. Is that write up good? any suggestions? I have no idea what it means by Dynamic Rows (can someone explain this to me?)

One last question

I got this at gnc

http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2133619&cp=2167077.2168524.2169539&parentPage=family

I know a lot of guys who have been working out for a while dont really like gnc but is the only place I know. The product taste really good, what would you guys recommend after I finish with the bottle?

Thanks a lot, sorry for the long post =)

That program will serve you well.....dynamic rows, as I understand them, are just pulled to the sternum area explosively and with force, you still want to stay as close to 90 degrees as humanly possible, or else you just take the lats out of it and you might as well load up some real weight and do clean pulls or jump shrugs.

For the protein, thats fine and it is a great price for 6lbs....it is a jaw-droppingly great price considering it is GNC.....I feel protein is overrated, not overrated because it isn't important, but just overrated in that protein is protein. The $5 Tub-o-Shit at Wal-fart will serve you just as well as the $55 dollar tub of chemically engineered and biologically complete latest thing on the market. The first thing I look for in protein is taste (I absolutely will not choke down shit, which is why I will never purchase Nitro-Tech, lol).....the second thing I look for is something 'reasonably' priced. GNC, while overpriced usually, makes good-tasting products, and $23 for 6lbs of protein is DIRT CHEAP, so get some.

Protein powder is no miracle, it is just protein, If it isn't possible to get your protein from the preferred source (whole foods), then a powder is fine for convenience sake, but really make it a point to eat your protein from whole food sources.

a lot of people have used this with great success. it should be a good workout for you.

protein....drink whatever you like the taste of the best. its not gonna make one damn difference if you drink GNC brand, or Muscle Tech brand. I recommend getting whatever is the cheapest and gives you the best grams of protein per servings to price ratio. I have found that I like the taste of the GNC brand in the black container, and it is the right price

If you like the layout of "the" Starr 5x5 (good choice, as already mentioned), I'd suggest doing the version in the sticky instead of the one in the link you posted. The linked version is better than 90% of the stuff out there, but there are a couple of big issues, namely:

1. It has you doing sets-across (e.g. 4-5 sets with 90+% of your 5RM) on all of your lifts, which you definitely don't need at this point to progress and learn the lifts.
2. The recommended exercise order (deads [5x5 with same weight, no less!] before squats, bench press before squats) will leave you fatigued for the lift that drives the program and your development.

The main thing is to go all the way. Don't do any of this half-assed shit I see all the time at my gym. You know, those guys who say they are gonna start working out then all they do is come like 2 times a week and eat like crap and never make any improvements. If your going to do this go all out!!!

Just a note on that GNC whey protein - I bought some last week instead of my usual Optimum Nutrition stuff cuz it was cheaper & the lady at GNC was really pushing it so I gave it a shot. I don't know if its just the jug I got but I get the nastiest sort of "nutrasweet" aftertaste from that stuff. Ick. I went back & bought my usual.

On Whey is unbeatable IMO

I second that. I can find it around here at $27 for 5lbs....all of the flavors are great....of course I also use generous amounts of ice cream and milk in my shakes, so they should taste great.

semi agreed... because i'm sure it may be beat someday :)

i've used many lbs of it... on my second 5lb jug of strawberry... i'm usually a choc. flavoring person. but I went with strawberry cuz it's great with milk or juice...chocolate in juice is a puking concoktion.

ON Whey is real solid...any of you guys ever try trueprotein.com's products? I'm on my second tub of their egg white protein...they can be a little pricey but I like their stuff so far...

While we're on the (off-)topic, it's ON and Dymatize for me. I highly recommend the latter - I've tried most of the flavors and have yet to find a bad one.

never mind, it pretty much say dont do cardio or very little if you have to do it. I just dont see how only 3 times a week and very little excersices will do what I want... guess we'll see.

Another question, he didnt really say anything about cardio (or maybe I missed it)
on the between days can I do cardio/abs?
yes, you can.

I wouldn't go all hardcore and do HIIT though... because if reaching new PR's is your goal it could possibly hinder it.

30 minute walk on an incline at around 2.8 speed on the treadmill is reccomended by some for active recovery... abs 2-3 times a week is fine, don't forget your lower back (spinal erectors) ... hyper extentions or GM's (good mornings)
