Yep, I was just charged with theft in the 5th degree.
I left my house with about $35 dollars today to run some errands. I had to drop off some paperwork, grabbed some fast food, got a haircut, and went to a store similar to Wal-Mart to pick up some hair color.
I spent $4.50 on food, my haircut cost $19 + a $3 dollar tips for a grand total of $22.
So I walk into the last store with $9.50. I walk to the hair color dept expecting to spend 6 dollars tops. Of all the hair color choices they offered the only one that was the color I want cost $10.49. I was about $1 short.
I'm not sure what train of thought I went into at this point, but it wasn't a good one. I didn't feel like driving 10 miles to my house to grab $1.50 to pay for something so petty.
Guess what I did? I grabbed another hair dye that cost $8.79 and switched the contents of each box.
I then proceeded to the express checkout lane, paid my $9.20 or for the hair color, and walked out non-chalantly. Big mistake. 2 seconds later security has his hands on my shoulders and escorts me to the security room. I had to walk in front of damn near 15 registers that were FULL of customers since it was rush hour. Talk about embarassing.
So we go back there and he asks if I know what he wants to talk to me about. I said yes and explained myself. He sure didn't give a shit, nor did I expect him to. 15 minutes later a cop shows up and talks to the both of us for a few minutes. He didn't seem to think it was a big deal, acted rather fondly, but he carried out his duties and wrote me up for theft in the 5th degree.
I now have to go to court next Thursday where I'll plead guilty and swallow my pride. I'm not expecting sympathy, and I don't care about the fine, but god damn this is embarassing.
The funny thing is afterwards I drove all the way home, grabbed the $2 I originally needed, went back to the store, and exchanged the items.
You may proceed with the flames while I rinse out my Chocolate Cherry hair dye.
