Jumping ropes for abs???

i heard jumping rope is good for abs from more than one person. Is this true or myth???? and if true how does jumping rope work abs.... i really dont understand that one

with so much rebounding and leg movement, as was said, your abs act as a stabilizer. think outside the box on this one as a movement and not strictly isolation.

Rope jumping is one of the best exercises for overall conditioning and abs. 4 pound weighted jump rope drills are intense. And there's so many variations you can do with regards to foot placements. A lot better than using an elliptical machine I think.

Jumping rope is very effective as a form of HIIT. The more fat you lose, the more you will be able to see your abs.

WWWWWAAAAAAYYYY better than the eliptical! :

MAN THATS A SURPRISE... well right now im broke and cant afford a rope so im jumping up and down acting like im skipping rope... i figure its the same thing. Is there any certain ways i can do it to help me more????

when you can get a rope, get one. Its way different than just jumping up and down. your upper body stays tight a bit too when swinging the rope. then when you get to doing footwork, you'll be really breathing!

my rope is pretty cheap. its one of the beaded ropes. i think it was like 10 bucks or so. best cardio equipment I have. I like to do jump rope sprints (relatively speaking) to where you are running a certain distance (its not that far) as fast as you can.

The BEST jump rope I own was $3.88 at Wal-Mart. Rubberish rope with nice handles that have the bearings in them for smooth action. I know you said you're broke, but think about that before (IF) you spend any money on snacks, sodas, games, etc. :)

^^what he said.

Regardless where you buy it, make sure it's a speed rope (ball bearings) and for christ's sake make sure it's the proper length. There's nothing quite like watching someone try to skip with a rope that's too damn short. ;)

This might be a stupid question, but is there a way to jump rope without killing your calves. I've decided i like jumping rope, but i don't like having totally sore calves for the rest of the week. Also, you guys mentioned different footwork that can make it more intense? anyone care to elaborate??

standing on the rope with your feet together you should be able to pull the handles up to next to your chest (stretched out).

I like the rope a little longer....... I jump rope for 15-30 minutes almost daily and enjoy doing cross-overs so the longer rope makes it a tad easier to keep timing.

I always get the craziest arm and shoulder pumps from jumping rope. I try to go 5 three-minute rounds after every workout.

Beats the hell out of my knees though. I need to find something softer than my driveway to do it on. :)

Use an anti-fatigue mat to jump on. I have two in my garage near my workbench. I grab one, throw it in the middle of the floor, and start skipping. Bought it at Costco.

anything where your body must fight to keep the same center of gravity as you lift and move weights around is good for your abs.
