Too much testosterone kills brain cells

Bawhwhahahaha!
http://www.cnn.com/2006/HEALTH/09/27/testosterone.kills.reut/index.html

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Too much testosterone can kill brain cells, researchers say, in a finding that may help explain why steroid abuse can cause behavior changes such as aggressiveness and suicidal tendencies.

Tests on brain cells in lab dishes showed that while a little of the male hormone is good, too much of it causes cells to self-destruct in a process similar to that seen in brain illnesses such as Alzheimer's.

"Too little testosterone is bad, too much is bad but the right amount is perfect," said Barbara Ehrlich of Yale University in Connecticut, who led the study.

Testosterone is key to the development, differentiation and growth of cells and is produced by both men and women, although men produce about 20 times more of the hormone.

It can also be abused, and recent scandals have involved athletes who use the hormone, or steroids that turn into testosterone in the body, for an unfair advantage.

"Other people have shown that high levels of steroid can cause behavioral changes," Ehrlich said in a telephone interview.

"We can show that when you have high levels of steroids, you have high testosterone and that can destroy the nerve cells. We know that when you lose brain cells you lose function."

Ehrlich's team tried the same thing with the "female" hormone estrogen, just to be fair.

"We were surprised, but it actually looks like estrogen is neuroprotective. If anything, there is less cell death in the presence of estrogen," she said.

Writing in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, Ehrlich and colleagues said their findings meant people should think twice about supplementing with testosterone, even if it does build muscle mass and aid recovery after exercise.

"These effects of testosterone on neurons will have long-term effects on brain function," they wrote.

"Next time a muscle-bound guy in a sports car cuts you off on the highway, don't get mad -- just take a deep breath and realize that it might not be his fault," Ehrlich said in a statement.

The cells die via a process called apoptosis, also known as cell suicide or programmed cell death.

"Apoptosis is an important thing for the brain -- the brain needs to weed out some of the cells. But when it happens too frequently, you lose too many cells and causes problems."

A similar process is seen in Alzheimer's disease, the most common cause of dementia in the United States, affecting an estimated 4.5 million Americans, and Huntington's disease, another fatal brain illness.

"Our results suggest that the responses to elevated testosterone can be compared with these pathophysiological conditions," the researchers wrote.

So according to that study, just don't run anti-e's and you're safe.

I have seen studies that say low test levels resulted in more aggression. Wish i could find them now.

I forget, are eggs bad for you this week or not?

"Too little testosterone is bad, too much is bad but the right amount is perfect," said Barbara Ehrlich of Yale University in Connecticut, who led the study.

This is the most non-scientific statement I have ever seen...we call this type of research, "advocacy research"

Incredibly insightful. I bet you could replace "testosterone" with "sunlight", "water", "orange juice", "red meat", "internet usage", "sex", ... damn. That sure is a useful statement.

fuck whatever so does weed

LOL at coming to conclusions based on an invitro study....the body is a lot more complicated than dumping x amount of compound into isolated cells....geez. We've "cured" cancer how many times invitro???

Yes, this in-vitro study is spot on when they conclude that "finding that may help explain why steroid abuse can cause behavior changes such as aggressiveness and suicidal tendencies."

Umm ya. More media propaganda..

yet taking shitloads of anti depressants.. anti fat.. anti allergy drugs are perfectly safe.

What is it with steroids? Why does the media and our politicians have such a hard on for em?

that study is BS. they probably applied loads of test on a small sample.

i bet a few nights of binge drinking is just as bad as a whole cycle of AS, if not worse

I LOVE studies like this..............................

i love even more when every one dissmisses doctors/physicans findings when they say something bad about AAS.
do a search, every neg thing sad by a doc on this site will be refuted by the jr brain surgeons here. kinda alarming if you ask me

NO ONE has EVER denied that there are health risks involved with AAS...........

NO ONE on ANY board will deny that..............

more for the sake of arguement than anything...and i can't comment on the above article. but over the yrs i've noticed a defensivness here anytime a physican/doc says something neg about AAS...just what i've noticed.

I think we can all agree that it's just Human Nature bro............

some people don't take the risk serious enough

others blow the risks out of proportion...........

I've always tried to stay somewhere in-between...........

did you use AAS to get to 300 lbs? or do you use to get down from 300 lbs?

LOL...addicts in denial will deny the sky is blue if it means they can rationalize their behaviour. ;-)

Heather, what a shock...................
Hey - who's denying "anything"............

Who?

I don't think you want an honest answer............

If you do - just hit me up with a PM.

This is the C&C board, and I don't know if I can be convinced that I'm not being set up.

Wow - you pass judgement on people you don't know and now you can decipher my "tone" from words on your screen............

Pretty talented...................

LOL....lighten up, bro. You are looking a bit ridiculous.

Do you think I started that thread about women juicers the other day or something? wootom did. The only thing I said on that thread is that there are health risks to juicing and that I think it should be legalized.

Now, what is funny is that with all the men on there saying some pretty rude, insulting things, you pick me out to attack and follow around, even today, as if I'm the anti-juicing poster child.

You are coming across to me to be a brick shy of a load.

Juice all you want buddy. I could care less.

You have a lot to say for someone who doesn't care.......................

I'm not even talking about AAS anymore, now you seem to remind me more of a naive teenage girl..............

You seem to me to be the kind of juicer that took way too much test and now wants to fuck some woman up...:lmao:

Oh, I'm fine............

I trained naturally for years and at 6'6" I got to 275 without any AAS, then I decided that I wanted to try competing around 23 yrs old. (at that point I could still get info/recommendations from my doc about AAS - bloodwork - etc)

Did a few cycles and got up to 290 @ about 10% bf (26 years old)

I was only a couple of months from contest-ready when a drunk driver hit me head on at over 90MPH. I was in the hospital for a long time - almost died.
I couldn't lift for about 5 years and blew up to over 400lbs.

I wasn't cleared to lift until late last year.

I weighed in at 420lbs @ about 30%bf - natty test levels were bottomed out.

I dieted down to 350 naturally, and then I started cycling earlier this year (Test/EQ)

Right now I'm at 330 and have almost "all" my strength back.........

Went to my doc last month and he said I'm healthier that most of his patients my age (33) - in fact, my blood pressure has never been better.

So I "please" excuse me if I take a little offense to people lumping all AAS users together and generalizing that we are all going to shorten our lives, etc.

It's simply not true........

Remember, it was physicians that said AAS don't work....As far as health risks, it's well established in animal studies that heavy long term androgen use WILL shorten lifespan. However, articles published based on invitro studies generalizing results REALLY piss me off, not in a roid rage way because I haven't used anything illegal in years, but from the standpoint of a reasonable person. :coffee:

so now people who responsibly use AAS are addicts?

Why don't you just shut up and go make a thread about what a pain in the ass it is to watch your manicurist work on your cuticles?

Just drop it and shut up.

Go tend to your chain smoking alcoholic grandfatherfianceemoneybag.
