Judo

I am considering starting Judo. I have had some experience with BJJ (only about a year) but where I live now Judo is my only grappling option. Is Judo to sport focused for MMA?

anything is too sport focused for MMA if you are not able to adapt it as a fighter
Judo has a respectable history in MMA
if that's what your looking for
now having said that like with any other style, the instructor and students (yourself included) determine what you'll get out of it
if the school tends to focus on throws and do little matwork your groundgame is going to be iffy
but it's better then not training

See how much they focus in the ground aspect if you want to grapple alot. THere is a school of Judo called Kosen Judo- which I am sure Helio knocked off because, BJJ and KJ looks EXACTLY the same. Oh and the MMA world has some great Judokas:

Fedor Emalianenko
Hayato Sakurai
Karo Parisiyan... off the top of my head.

Fedor is a sambo practitioner, as well as his brother who infact didnt let his hands really fly in his last fight because he wanted to "prove sambos superiority over judo"

But yes judo does transfer to mma, yarg im suprised you didnt mention yoshida.

I've never trained in it yet but I've been to a school once and watched, and grappled a little with someone who taught me a little bit. I personly like throws because I think it would be very usefull for self defence/ street fight. I'd go for it if I where you.

Judo throws work very well for takedowns in MMA, on the street, in grappling tournaments - you name it. Some people try to say that Judo throws are too dependant on the gi. Not so. I've used Judo throws (and variations of them) plenty of times in no gi situations.

Go here and click on any of the links that say "Watch Video" and you will see what I mean:

As far as mat work goes, ALL of the newaza techniques in Kodokan Judo are also in BJJ, and all the ones that aren't (knee bars, ankle locks, neck cranks, heel hooks etc.) used to be before the Olympic/competition era of Judo forced them to be shelved. They are still part of Judo mind you, it's just that many dojos do not teach them any more because those techniques cannot be used in competition. I would definately encourage you to at least try Judo. Besides its WAY less expensive than BJJ or MMA classes.

Judo is very similar to Sambo, as sambo came about from the derivation of Judo. Judo is a great sport to pratice for takedowns, groundwork and applying the body mechanics into the ring.
Although it is a defensive martial art, I personally love it because I gain an edge simply by waiting for the mistake from my attacker.
Its a great choice. :)
