Joint Function & Longevity

Tom Treutlein

New member
After buying the Core Performance book and really thinking about it, I know I want to keep my body functional as long as possible. Well, maybe not as long as possible, if that means going to extreme lengths like ceasing activities that put high impact on the joints and body (sprinting, sparring).

My question was this: What things will adversely affect the longevity of one's body?

I know having proper posture is awesome, as is stretching and activities such as movement prep, which I now perform daily. They get me geared up for a new day, and relieve any tension I may have, which isn't normally any.

However, is there a need for higher reps (such as the 15's to "flush the body with lactic acid)? Or can one lift heavy (WSB style, 1-RM 2x a week, squat/dead and bench) with assitance exercises week in, week out, without any issues?

My goal is maximal strength right now, and size will come on top of that. Long term goal of fighting, as you probably already know. Want to make sure I can do that as long as possible.

Anything I should know?

Don't lock out your joints, that will help you in the long run for sure. Take care of your shoulders, get a good warm up because that will likely be the first place you have trouble.

Hey TT, sorry brah but cant resist your self contradiction. LOL

...Yup, there's somthing ya should already know here; Long term fighting is not going to keep your body funcional as long as possible!!!

Two of my good clients from CA both fought in the octagon, both in great shape but both retired from it, one at age 30 and the other at 31. Reason for retirement was cause they were not "As functional as possible",...anymore!! (Even if they still could kick the livin' shit outta me) Some of there stories woulda' blown yer mind!!

High impact exercise, like running, isn't necessarily bad on your joints.

It's bad on dysfunctional joints, that aren't bearing load correctly.

If your body is posturally correct, then there won't be problems. Your body is designed to absorb shock.
