Depp is an amazing actor and takes difficult roles.. and masters them.. even though POTC was a lighthearted movie.. he was amazing.. almost every movie he does.. he is convincing.

Other than the fact that he lives in France.. I like him.. seems like a pretty down to Earth guy in interviews too.

Depp spits on so-called "artists of their craft" like Russel Crowe, George Clooney, and other cookie cutter actors. People like them rely on the script to make the actor. Depp is an actor that makes the script.

To me, Depp's best role was in Pirates of the Carribean. It would have been easy to overact that role and make the character ridiculous, but he made it believable. Jack Sparrow was a tough character to play, and he did it brilliantly.
