"Fritz-Erich von Manstein called Erich von Manstein (November 24, 1887 – June 9, 1973) was a field marshal in World War II. He became one of the most prominent commanders of Germany's World War II armed forces (Wehrmacht). During World War II he attained the rank of Field Marshal (Generalfeldmarschall) and was held in high esteem by his fellow officers as one of the Wehrmacht's best military strategists.
He was the initiator and one of the planners of the Ardennes-offensive alternative in the invasion of France in 1940. He received acclaim from the German leadership for the victorious battles of Perekop Isthmus, Kerch, Sevastopol and Kharkov. He was Prussian, as am I, and he was the greatest military mind of the 20th century; He also designed the NATO defense plan for western Europe.
He intentionally refused to allow units under his command to participate with einsatzgruppen in "non-military operations" like rounding up Jews and other "undesirables"....one of many clashes with Hitler whom he referred to as the "Austrian corporal."
He was approached by those plotting the death of Hitler as portrayed in the movie "Valkyrie" but refused based on the grounds that, "Prussian Marshal's do not revolt."
The Second Battle of Kharkov is the most brilliant example of the mobile defense in history...

My dad's side is Prussian. My wife is Prussian (German but her complete line is from Prussia).
She has pictures of her grandparents and they are dressed up in Wehrmacht uniforms. Both men died on the Eastern Front. I saw their lineage paperwork too. They had to prove they were Aryans and had it traced to the 1600s.
Her grandmother and mom were captured by Russians at the close of the war. 15+ men raped both of them at the same time. Her grandmother escaped and walked from East Prussia to Bavaria in the winter. One of her children died along the way. My wife's dad survived. Amazing story.

My paternal grandfather and grandmother immigrated after WWI...our land was confiscated to form Poland. My grandfather was a very smart man, he sailed from England and upon arrival gave an English version of the family name, he spoke fluent English...he worked for the mining company as security, gotta keep the Hunky's under control. He's probably the reason the feds didn't imprison my family upon the onset of WWII. My father served in the Pacific and his brothers served in the 82nd and 101st.

Erich Von Manstein had quarrels with Hitler, as did a lot of top brass towards the end of the war.
He allowed deportations, executions of POW's and handed commissars over to the SS.
He was a Nazi who participated in the genocide, even if only passively.
His defense: "just following orders" typical BS defense for a lot of Nazi war criminals after the war.
Fuck Von Manstein and all the other Nazi war criminals. If you want to show pride in Prussian ancestry there are a lot of other non-militaristic, non-Nazi examples.

He was never charged with genocide and not a Nazi... if you read the history of the Nuremberg trials they were a joke, speaking as someone with legal training. Most of the convictions for the Malmedy massacre were overturned. The Soviets wanted him convicted so he was convicted on charges of "scorched earth" and not doing enough to protect civilians. Omar Bradley, an American general, ordered the execution of snipers. Tens of thousands of German POW's died in American custody because they couldn't be fed or clothed properly....that's war. The civilians always suffer the most.
When I served in the Army I didn't vote,I was a political, in Prussian tradition, I served the state and the elected leaders.

Where was his "Soldiers honor" when the genocide was happening all around him. Even if he did not actively participate in it. Deportations and executions of POW's happened under his command.
Believe what you want, military strategist or not he was still working for Hitler.

Should every American soldier be held responsible for Abu Ghraib? I know a number of officers that knew they were sending captured prisoners for further interrogation. They're good men in my opinion but should they be held responsible for torture committed by others? I understand what it means to be Prussian because my grandfather instilled it in me. I'm not only Prussian in nationality but also military service.

I was an NCO...went through officer training...honorably discharged.
I served in Desert Storm...18th Airborne Corps...
Got a law degree after that and self taught computer nerd...

Hitler created a dynamic that pitted people against one another. The Wehrmacht officers hated the SS whom they saw as nothing more than political hacks playing soldier but they were rivals. On an unrelated note, Roosevelt did the same thing with his advisers. I can post videos produced by the Nazi leadership showing how concentration camp inmates were properly treated and given a proper education in how to be good Germans. Honestly, comparing Shrub or Barry to Hitler doesn't give enough credit to Hitler. I've read the first hand accounts of Manstein and Rommel going into a meeting with Hitler knowing the situation and coming out completely convinced by Hitler.
