Japan Cracking down on obesity

I have mixed feelings on this. Im for everybody keeping their weight and fittness in check, but on the other hand I dont like the goverment coming in with one measurment and saying this is the standerd. What if the guy is 6 ft 10 and has a 34 inch waist?

yeah i know it's not perfect but it's better than nothing at all. Like the B.M.I.(body mass index) system we use is complete bullshit. if you are 5'8 and weigh over 160 you are considered overweight. so that's obviously retarded. I'm 5'8 183 but under 10 % body fat. so I am definitely not overweight. but waist measurements are a little more accurate. because even huge guys that have a lot of muscle usually still have smaller waists. i think Arnolds was around 30-32. but american males average is 39! come on thats crazy.

I agree that the majority of Americans are obese, but their shouldn't be a government standard there is just to many different body types.

Damn I believe Japan already has the highest life expectancy in the world and now there doing this. No wonder they are overpopulated.

From the article above:

"If necessary, those people will be steered toward further re-education after six more months."

Hmm....Sounds familiar. Let's see:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brainwashing

"The PRC (Peoples Republic of China) had refined and extended techniques earlier used in the Soviet Union to prepare prisoners for show-trials, and they in turn had learned much from the Inquisition. In the Chinese context, these techniques had multiple goals that went far beyond the simple control of subjects in the prison camps of North Korea. They aimed to produce confessions, to convince the accused that they had indeed perpetrated anti-social acts, to make them feel guilty of these crimes against the state, to make them desirous of a fundamental change in outlook toward the institutions of the new communist society, and, finally, to actually accomplish these desired changes in the recipients of the brainwashing/thought-reform."

I don't think it's brainwashing at all, because most obese people aren't obese because they want to be. So in actuality you are not changing there "beliefs" at all. They are just educating them. lots of people are ignorant when it comes to exercise and nutrition. If that's brainwashing then any time someone tells someone (steers them toward) to go to college, or stay in school, or watch their diet, or start exercising then you must think they are brainwashing them ?? right? Also I must add I do believe their standards may be a little strict 34 in. But there is NO standard in america. I don't know what they would be maybe something like under 6 ft. no more than 34 1/2 in. and 6-6'5 no more than 36 1/2. they could make regulations like college and professional athletes are not subject to the measurements, just some ideas....

I do understand your point but, you did not understand mine. This is not just education. There is a big difference between suggesting they watch their diet and forced "reeducation". Passing laws forcing people to change their ways (brainwashing) in order to fit a predetermined social norm (or ideal social standard) is exactly what this article is discussing. Would you suggest "reeducation" to eliminate certain policitcal and religous opinions through force in order to protect the party in power is bad but "reeducation" to force others to fit a social and physical standard determined by the party in power is okay?

well like I said before I'm sure Japan's system has flaws in it. But I believe it is better than nothing at all. Also what they are talking about is not political views, or religion. it's their health, you can't compare it. I'm not sure what the answer is for America. Maybe the school systems should start focusing on Physical Education, and diet more than they are now. Alot of people have very little knowledge on diet and exercise. I know so many people that have said "I'm on a diet" or "I've been watching what I eat" and after one conversation about their "diet" I realize they don't know what hell they are doing. with knowledge they have a chance.

If obama gets elected, you will.. the cost to people that are outside of the expected BMI will be enormous..

This is awesome, I think the Unites States needs to adopt a program like this. The average waist size for Caucasian (white) American men is 39 inches!! Thats huge. Something needs to be done about this. heres what Japan is doing and they aren't close to being as obese as America.

These measurements are crap and totally unreal to set one standard guideline. My waste is above the 39" mark but I have normal healthy BF%, below normal BP, below normal resting HR, far below normal cholesteral. Years of heavy lifting have thickened my midsection which I'm sure this kind of law wouldn't take into effect.

Health is a case by case basis and you can't just start making broadstroke rules to try and fit everyone into the same basket.

Cheers,

Good for them. Their society is tolerant of control and guidance from the government.

We aren't. Which is why nationalized healthcare would be a complete disaster.
