While I was at the gym this morning there were the usual weekenders in there. I was working chest, just finished inclines and started declines when this guy come up to me and ask for a spot. I was between sets, so I didn't mind that part, but the part that bothered me was he was asking me to spot him while he was benching in the smith machine. I just bit my tongue and spotted him, then I had to run some guy away from my decline bench.

:smash:

So? I get a spot when I do inclines on smith machine, what's wrong with that? Just b/c you don't need a spotter for "safety" reasons doesn't mean it's not nice to have someone help with a few forced reps. Now if he was benching like 95lbs in the smith machine, then I'd understand and hold him down while you whipped it out and pissed on him.

You do realize there are adjustable stops on the smith machine don't you?

I've always thought that was the reasoning behind people who use the smith machine.

Big4life, yes I use the stops, but that still has nothing to do with forced reps. I even do rest-pause on the smith machine, but I still get the best results when I get 2-3 forced reps at the end of my heaviest set, and I simply can't get forced reps without a spotter. At least I use respectable weight though :)

lol@ forced reps.
wait, i'm laughing even harder @ "smith machine".

What's so funny about forced reps? I used to do them. Rarely do anymore cause I always workout alone.

thats very good

I have been avoiding the gym during the week some days. I figure the NY Resolutioners should only last another week or two.

Years ago when I was first working out, I was benching in the smith, and I couldn't get the bar up to the adjustable pin, and in my struggles I didn't rotate it to go onto the next pin down and it fell on my chest, and I was pinned like a cockroach with 135 smithweight on my chest. Some big dude helped me out.

i'm sorry- its just not how i train but i guess its good for some people.
its just funny to do forced reps on a smith machine to me.

Sorry I don't train like you anymore sugarplum. But just to show I care, I did start out as a powerlifter. Chains, bands, boards, all that fun stuff, and no machines. I pressed 225 in competition when I was 19 and weighed 118lbs after one year of lifting. I was tiny, but had a decent strength-to-weight ratio. Gotta say though, I look much better with my "forced reps" and "smith machine" workouts than I did then, and I'm even stronger lb for lb than I was then. Please don't hate me, your approval means more than it should to me ;)

lol, i'm not very familiar with training just for size rather than strength, so i should apologize.
you're old bench was very good-its too bad you didn't keep it up. i know a powerlifter (male) who is in the 115 class and very successful, but i'd have to look up what his bench is (most people aren't impressed by it cause they fail to realize how little he weighs).
