Ok, here is the game plan for my next car. I plan on picking up a 96-98 camaro. Regardless of which engine it has in it, I'll pick up a used LS-1 to rebuild. I would like to have a nice daily driver, that gets at least 20 mpg, but still has over 500 hp. Throw me out some ideas here. I prefer automatic transmissions, due to ease of driving, and the fact that they are faster when set up correctly, than a standard.
I need the following ideas:
-choices of transmissions, pro's con's, price range of each, how to configure it.
-ideas on what to do with my ls-1. I have a friend here who has a friend who does a LOT of CNC headwork for people, and even does NASCAR and some pro-stock heads who will clean up my factory heads for around $400, so this gives me something to work with on the heads, without having to invest in a set of aftermarket heads or risk fucking up my heads by porting them myself (I have NO experience with this engine)

I'll change my rearend, and redo all the suspension long before the engine is ready.

Remember peeps this is going to be a daily driver, not my weekend car, so we do not need to run 9's.

Why not just save up and get yourself a fat ass escalade. That's what I'm doing anyway ;)

Because:
1) I like fast cars... and I like to modify them myself (I had a 10 second firebird in hs that I drove to school at least once a week)
2) Escalades are ugly as hell...

Stop hijacking my thread orbs... if you do not know anything about aftermarket parts and heavily modified CHEVY engines and cars please do not waste space. Thank you.

WHAT!?!?!! Escalades are the shit, I don't know what Escalades they have out in Texas, but here it's a pimp ride.

So what, you take your "muscle car", I'll take my muscled body and my escalade anyday.

The OEM 4L60E trans should be more than adequate at sane power levels. Look at someone like Art Carr (the REAL Art Car, not the copycat company) for a good non-lockup torque converter and trans rebuild kit.

re: 500 HP: Is this just a number you want to attain, or do you have a specific performance goal in mind? Check out this build-up of a 10-second LS1. They've since gotten the car into the 9's, but it's pretty aggressive and not exactly what I'd call a "daily driveable street car" anymore.

It's late and I don't feel like googling for all the links right now, so I'll dig you up some other links for vendors and message boards later. You can start by checking out this website. I'm told there's quite a bit of good info available there.

Also, check out the LS1 articles over at Chevyhighperformance.com. (linked directly to LS1 search results).

Lastly, don't forget Lingenfelters.

This should be more than enough to get you started and lined up with good vendors. If you need any other help, gimme a shout, I'll be glad to help.
