STAUNTON -- Authorities arrested seven men Wednesday night after accusing them of performing sex acts on one another inside the men's locker room at the YMCA on North Coalter Street, the Staunton Police Department said.

One of the men is a former aerobics instructor who taught evening classes for at least five years at the Staunton-Augusta YMCA, according to the facility's executive director.

The investigation was launched April 7 after a member reported to staff that he caught a man peering into his stall while showering. Minutes later, the suspect was reportedly seen masturbating inside the steam room, according to a police report. Staff at the YMCA immediately reported the incident to police.

Based on the suspect's description, police interviewed James Matthew Acord, 30, of 8 N. Lynnhaven Drive, Staunton. He and six others were eventually charged and arrested Wednesday night. Acord is charged with single counts of indecent exposure and obscene exhibition. Others charged include:

# Joseph Ira Earhart, Jr., 47, of 209 Overlook Road, Staunton -- single counts of indecent exposure and consensual sodomy, and two counts of engaging in obscene exhibition.

# James Elwood Sheets, 57, of 323 College Circle, Staunton -- one count of indecent exposure, two counts of consensual sodomy and two counts of engaging in obscene exhibition.

# Kenneth Virgil Amick, 37, of 304 White Hall Ave., Staunton -- single counts of indecent exposure and engaging in consensual sodomy.

# George Glenn Bartley, Jr., 53, of 19 East Johnson St., Staunton -- single counts of indecent exposure, solicitation to commit sodomy and obscene exhibition.

# Rodger Kirk Propst, 38, of 304 Robinhood Rd., Staunton -- single counts of indecent exposure and obscene exhibition.

# Samuel Lewis Perkins, 41, of 40 Sunderlin Place, Verona -- single counts of indecent exposure and obscene exhibition.

All of the suspects are free on bond.

Police believe the sexual encounters began in mid-February and ceased when the investigation was launched. Police spokeswoman Amy Pultz said the sexual acts reportedly occurred "primarily in the steam room and the shower room area" of the men's locker room.

Pultz said the men allegedly met at "sporadic days of the week and sporadic times."

All of the sodomy charges pertain to oral sex, she said.

The April 7 complaint was the only one police received in reference to the suspects. Additional arrests are not pending.

"We have everyone that has been described as being involved," Pultz said.

All of the suspects were members except for Earhart, who taught aerobics at the YMCA for at least five years, according to Morris Peltz, executive director of the Staunton-Augusta YMCA. Shortly after the original complaint, Peltz said Earhart's "name came up" and that his position was immediately terminated.

Prior to his hiring, a background check was conducted, Peltz said, as is the case with all employees

"His check was as clean as can be," he said.

Peltz said it is his understanding that the reported sexual liaisons occurred at night, usually while one man served as a lookout.

"This was a discreet, discreet group of adults," Peltz said, adding, "No safety or security of members was at any time jeopardized."

Notices concerning the allegations have been posted at the YMCA.

Peltz said the sex allegations and subsequent investigation "opened our eyes."

In the past, locker rooms were checked every hour, but the steam room doors were left closed.

That will change, Peltz noted, as doors to the steam rooms in both the men's and women's locker rooms will now be opened periodically by staff checking on members.

"The locker room is designed to be a private area. They took advantage of that," the director said.

"We have to change our procedures now."

All of the men had their memberships revoked.

Peltz said the alleged actions of the seven men shouldn't hurt the YMCA overall, which has more than 6,000 members.

"Our mission is going to continue," he said. "We're a safe organization."
