IT certifications are so retarded

Spunky

New member
I paid $125 today when I signed up for my 2000 Pro MCP which I am taking tommorow. I think cert's are a big propaganda. You almost have to have them (in most cases) to get a good job, but yet I know alot of people who are MCSE's and don't know jack shit about a computer. I have had several 2000 pro classes and read several books in that area, so I know it pretty well.. however, depending on what practice test i take, sometimes i do really shitty because of the way the questions are worded! THE QUESTIONS MAKE NO FUCKING SENSE ON SOME OF THESE CERT'S!!! Any other people in the computer field know what I'm talkin about ????

i like hearing ads for this shit on the radio.

"get certified to be an IT guru! they make 75,000 a year!!"

pfft...hohoho

There are ads all the time hear for IT. Theres also one of the largest support groups for layed off IT workers here in the same city. This is what makes sense: your out $125.00 and someone else has it now.

i spent $6k in classes and tests and what not back in 2000 when i first got out of the usn and earned my mcp, mcse, and mcdba.. i knew the shit from a book then.. comes down to real experience and i didn't know shit.. BUT.. i was lucky enough at the time that companies still placed some emphasis and it got me a decent wage.. $23.50 for off-shifts with a corp-to-corp contract.. and now $21 with full benefits.. but still.. i'm working at a frigging help desk using nothing of what i learned in the classes.. at the time i earned the mcdba.. i was one of only 13,000 in the world but couldn't get a job as one because i didn't have experience.. it's all about who you know in the industry and how lucky you are really.. then once you start getting experience, getting the certs will start to come in handy.. but until then they're just wallpaper.. cuz now they really really really don't mean crap.. not even to my helpdesk.. we hired in a 2000 mcse at $15/hr dude.. he worked right next to a girl that didn't have any certs and made $15.50.. am i glad i did it? yes.. would i waste my time with it now if i was just now starting.. not a chance..

They are. They suck, but sometimes you have to have them. I'm an MCP. I was all gung ho to get my MCSE but now I could care less.

Some companies require it. Fortunalty though these companies are also wiseing up to the fact that some people are just studying for these tests and they have absolutely zero experience. What good is an MCSE if he/she's never touched a server.

These tests are also so stupid. The questions are completely ridiculous nonsense.

I would never waste another dime on a cert. they are worthless and the employers know that too. It's ok if you have one, but they won't pay you more for it. Also, the only thing that really counts college credit. Get a masters if you want to set yourself apart from the rest. An MBA doesn't go obsolete in 1 year.

i agree on the college part.. but not with the mba part bro..

everyone and their fucking brother is going for their mba.. it's starting to become as big a joke as the mcse.. the only mba's that are really worth a shit any more are usually engineers that worked in their field for like 10 years and then transitioned over to the business realm.. half the others are just college kids that still have no business/management experience whatsoever and go straight from their business curriculum to an mba program without "working their way up the corporate ladder.".. and they're just pissing their money away.

decem I actually completely agree with you. Right now it doesnt matter if you have mba, certification or even extensive experience. Employers don't give a fucka nymore because the economy is so clogged up that everyone tries to upgrade their status, and you basically have everyone with the same qualifications applying for a job. Ive been lucky enough to get interview with just a B.S. and almost no work experience, and I beat people with work exp and Masters for that position,a nd now waiting whether they will hire me.

Jim - its very tough. If you have the money and motivation, definetely go further. Very tough to find anyhting with just CS.

my under grad that i am finishing this year is in computer science with a minor in business. I have been looking at the MBA so that if i have to i could move into another field besides IT. Either way, i think it would help move one up into management.

not really.. i mean do what you want.. you're gonna anyway.. plus i could be wrong..

but the way i see.. you should get out with your minor in bus. and major in C.S. and just live life for a few years.. get some experience under your belt.. work for a company or two and get to see what companies are valuing these days.. then after that go back..

rev.. it is astonishing.. you and i agreeing that is.. (doesn't mean i have to like you).. but for real.. this is straight some crappy times to be looking for a job.. and it is a fact that everyone else is going back to school to get higher education in hopes of finding something better.. but it's all just gonna cancel each other out when every resume that's on that guy's desk says mba or master's or mcse or whatever....

and you may get that job.. cuz right now i really don't think anything besides having a college degree matters.. as they know you can learn job since you have the degree.. plus they don't have to pay you for any higher education or certs that you have..

the thing i don't agree with you on though is experience.. experience does matter.. even if it's just working as a manager at an applebee's or some shit.. the shitty part about getting the experience.. is that for some/most (me at least) it means taking a pay cut.. man i make $42k a year with benefits.. (WAIT.. before you scoff at it.. go to one of those cost of living calculators.. plug in my salary for youngstown ohio then put in what i'd have to make at to live the way i live if i were to live in the town you do.. you won't be scoffing for long).. and if i were to move out of what i do now.. the chances that i make as much are slim.. my only hope is that after earning my BBA in marketing in december.. i can vault off of my tech experience and transition into something on the business end that deals with tech shit..

who knows

That's what i have in mind as well. My dad is global accounts manager for data sales at a large corp. He makes good money, better than when he was strictly sales selling Cisco gear. Fortunately, since he has been in it for 30 years he has a lot of contacts to help me out when i graduate.

Yea, I called down to the recruiting office to see what the requirements were, and I meet all of them, just it's a hot job right now.

They want to do a 714 pull on me Oct. 1 so that I'll have all my paperwork ready to be submitted on Nov. 8 so that I'll have a better chance of getting it. See they said they would take me in the Army, just I got to wait a year after my surgery. Already went down to MEPS, passed physical, blood, ASVAB, just waiting till Nov. 8 then will be shipping out:destroy:

decem, very good post. I agree that a person with experience is definetely more valuable than someone without. For instance when they were interviewing me and asking me "what difficult situations you had", "how did you find creative oslution".... all I could reference was my classes that involved some independent work. After a while it got kinda corny that I keep talking about my classes, because they understood that very often college courses offer mock presentations working in teams and etc, that in no way translates to a real life application. However the fact that I require less salary than a woman with MBA from Cornell and 2 year work experience in a major bank is a plus for me.

Decem, if you are single, with 42k, living in a small suburban city, and you have enough for basic needs,.. like car.. paying off loans.... bills etc, then you obviously have the opportunity to go and study further. You have nothing to lose if you decide to do that. Keep your attitude positive man.

that always helps.. and you should use it..

i work for a major global firm.. but we've taken their it center and also turned into a profit center by housing servers getting other outside contracts.. etc for other companies besides our own.. i hope to transfer over to account management or sales or whatever end of that.. or if i'm lucky i want them to open up some type of marketing position where i can take this help desk and turn it into a profit center and obtain clients from all around the country.. that'd be the shit.. we'll see...

i don't know what i'll do if not.. i'm debating on getting into the car business... my step-dad owns a medium sized dealership (700 new a year) and i do something there or he also knows hella dealers around the place where i can get a job.. maybe his friend in hawaii that owns a shitload of dealerships has something.. who knows..

last post was to jim..

rev.. i am.. i actually need a break though.. i've been working 40 hours.. and driving 10 hours a week plus going to school full-time (5 or 6 in fall/spring and 3 or 4 in summers) for almost two years.. i'm taking 2 in fall to grad.. then taking semester off to get shit squared away and out of this help desk.. then back to school for my med school prereqs.. i figure after i've spent 3-4 years working in business realm, taking light load at school for shit that i'm actually interested in, then i'll be much more sure as to whether i wanna a do an mba or go to med school and practice medicine... and either one i want to do i'll have saved the money for... plus i'll have attained the experience that most mba programs require for admisssions if i decide to go that route..

but right now i need a fucking break..

moto.. i'm confused.. so you're going in without your acceptance to the school in writing? i'm not greatly familiar with how the army works.. but have a good idea (i was usn for 6 years).. i don't care what that recruiter says man.. don't trust him.. make him get you paperwork that says that you are guaranteed that school if you join..

btw.. congrats on deciding to join.. you'll have fun.. some parts will suck.. some parts will make you tougher.. other times you'll feel like you wasted your time.. but overall when you get out you'll be nothing but happy and proud that you did what you did..

Recruiters will tell you anything you want to hear. GET IT IN WRITING, they can put it in your contract. If you do not get it in writing Uncle Sam will pick a field he needs you in. Screw the three field choices they ask you. to select. Get it in writing or go to another recruiting station that will do that for you.

oh trust me I will, I'm on vacation in Ark. and when I get back and go down to the recruiting station to get my paper work done I'll have it in writing. So far my recruiter hasn't lied to me. But the one I talked to on the phone wasn't mine, mine's on vacation

Well even my dumbass has 2 years of college courses in. I was thinking of going back and getting a labor relations degree. However the comment of "everyone and their brother is going for an mba" made me think about it. They've been bitching about the education of the US employees for a long time, so now we've been put in the position of going higher and higher. Once everyone is there, you will have to rely more on your cocksucking and ass kissing skills to get ahead than you will your education. Of course in my field of interest id be doing it more for the learning and possible try to become a union rep or something in the future. Theres nothing better that I would like to do than negotiate good contracts for the working men and woman of the country.
