Is this right or wrong?

I teach in a school......it happens to be predominately muslim but that is perhaps irrelevant. Naturally the kids wish to discuss the war so they are given a chance. However, the school as decided to adopt the stance of peace at all costs. I think this is totally wrong because it presents only one side of the story..........and schools are meant to be politically impartial.

So is the school right or wrong??

They are wrong to prevent discussion IMO. But if i were you i would find out if discussing the war will result in anything happening to you professionally. Politically impartial is usually just another name for not rocking the boat.

I have already spoken to the union........they feel the school is wrong and that it is right to discuss the war. The only proviso being that I make it very clear when I am putting forward my personal opinion and when I am presenting other info.

In any case I am not sure that I would want to be part of a school that prevents discussion.........and my school cant afford to lose anymore staff anyway.

Since you don't say public or private school (likely public since you have a union), here's my shot.

An employer can tell you what you can and can't do on company time....period, with certain limits.

Your 1st Amendment rights can be infringed to a point, but not broken. If they said NO DISCUSSION about anything concerning the war, it would be okay. If they said talk only about one side of the issue, it woudl not be okay. That they permit talk on one perspective of an issue opens the door to the other perspectives and makes suppressing discussion of other viewpoints unconstitutional.

they are wrong to supress discussion IMHO

but the schools line should be total impartiality, as opposed to hawk or dove
