my roomate just told me he heard that cold water burned more calories than regular water or vice versa some shit like that...you guys ever heard this?

its true bro, your bodytemp is 98.6 degrees`when you drink a cold beverage your body has to heat that liquid up to keep your body temp regular, this process burns more calories than drinking water at room temperature.

While technically true, the amount of calories used to heat water inside an already hot body is negligible. It's not worth worrying about.

It takes 1 calorie to increase 1 ml of water 1.0 degrees celcius. Freezing temp in Celcius is 0, and body Temp is 37. 1000 calories make up 1KCal which is actually what food calories are.

So lets say you drink 4 liters (about a gallon) of ice cold water each day. Thats 4000 ml. Lets assume the water is near freezing (0 degrees celcius).

calories=4000ml*(37- 0 degrees C)*1.0 cal/(ml*degree)=148,000 calories.

But don't get too excited, cause 1000 calories is actually only I food calorie (KCal)

So dringing 1 gallon of freezing cold water will burn about 148 Calories a day. Not that much, but its something.

true

its been said that 8 pints of ice cold water a day, will substantially help the burning of calories.

Due to the bodies temp is lowered and needs to heat itself back up.

I am with Haz on this one: it is negligible

and what about running naked in the north pole ?:D

I do not know if consuming very cold water will do this, but sitting in cold water or staying in cold climates increases UCP activity and thermogenesis.

cold climates (but also very hot ones where you perspire a lot) makes your organism spend energy (thus calories) to regulate its internal temperature

...but there are more efficient ways to lose weight
