is the PTA really THAT powerful?

This powerful special interest group has inspired a hit country song (Harper Valley PTA) that crossed over to the pop charts as well as a 1978 motion picture and 1981 television series. Do they still wield the power they once had or has it declined and if so what has the impact been on the decline of the US public education system?

The PTA is only as strong as their members. In the District I work in the PTA is very active, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. The organization is non profit and all monies raised go back to the students/school. At my site the PTA purchased many big items the school could not afford, ie marque, new playground equipment for the Kinder kids, misting systems for those 110 degree days, sponsors students to attend outdoor science school, carnivals..They may be ruthless in demeanor but they get the job done.

we tried the PTA thing. most of the women on the PTA do not work or do not have to work because their husbands make a billion $'s so they think because they are home all the time they are expert parents. if you cant dedicate all of your free time to the PTA they don't even want you to bother coming. they think everyone should be able to be there all day like they are but in the real world most families are a income family and cant dedicate all their time to helping the school. and yes they are a bunch of stuck up bitches who really think their way of parenting is perfect and everyone else's is fucked up.
