Is Nizerol (sp?) good for acne?

Nizoral is a shampoo used for thinning hair...don't know why your doctor would prescribe it for acne. It's supposed to unclog the pores, so maybe that's it, but I would think there's alot of better things out there for acne.

I know what the shampoo is, this is a total different drug. It's a crea, but I don't know if I should go pick up my perscription because I'm sure it's not cheap.

Nizoral is a shampoo or an ointment and at one time was also available as an oral pill (don't think that exists anymore) that is effective at treating acne that results from fungal infections. Generally, on men, this the kind of acne that one can get on their backs, arms, shoulders...

The use as a hair loss treatment is "not approved of" but, as luck would have it, it's a good topical, non-systemic antiandrogen and has shown some benefit (similar results as with minoxidil 5%) in "hair restoration."

The 1% shampoo is available here in the States as an OTC for about $10/500ml. The 2% shampoo and ointments are not OTC (not here at least).

I found the topical to ointment to be very effective, but slightly irritating in treating similar acne on my back...

Actually the shampoo and the drug are basically the same thing ketoconazole in varying strengths. Originally they were all called "Ketoconazol" but I guess that wasn't so great from a marketing perspective.

First off Bionic man, Nizoral IS NOT for thinning hair. It's for fungal infections and other skin disorder's of the scalp. Read the instructions supplied with the stuff. Anyway Canon I get very bad acne on my scalp and have found Nizoral 100% effective in combats it. I've never tried it for acne anywhere else as I don't ever get acne from my cycles. I'd give the Nizoral a go first as Accutane is very very strong with lots of side's.

Nizorol is used for thinning hair. It prevents the androgenic activity of DHT in the scalp thus preventing hairloss. The same principle applies with acne in the skin. It is also very good at combating dandruff.

I'm using the shampoo. I wonder if I should try scrubbing my back with it once in awhile as a preventative measure?

Nizoral is (ketoconazole) which is an antifungal medication. I used it years ago to treat tinea which was a fungal rash on my skin... it is also a shampoo which is great for dandruff, but i never heard of it used for thinning hair.. that is what rogaine is for. However the rash/acne you have on your skin could be a fungus of some sort and then it will be taken care of by using nizoral.

Haha I don't have anything like that, just thought there may be an acne-preventing effect during last few weeks of cycle.

I am aware that it's dandruff shampoo, anti-fungal, etc., but all these boards have been talking for years about using this Nizoral to keep hair during a cycle.

I really don't know if it's true, but it might be. I am also taking saw palmetto.

Next time around I'll just use Proscar.

It would be interesting if it could treat acne though, even if it's not officially supposed to be "for that."

While it is an antifungal it also helps with hairloss

Title
Ketoconazole shampoo: effect of long-term use in androgenic alopecia.
Source
Dermatology. 196(4):474-7, 1998.
Abstract
BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of androgenic alopecia is not fully understood. A microbial-driven inflammatory reaction abutting on the hair follicles might participate in the hair status anomaly. OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to determine if ketoconazole (KCZ) which is active against the scalp microflora and shows some intrinsic anti-inflammatory activity might improve alopecia. METHOD: The effect of 2% KCZ shampoo was compared to that of an unmedicated shampoo used in combination with or without 2% minoxidil therapy. RESULTS: Hair density and size and proportion of anagen follicles were improved almost similarly by both KCZ and minoxidil regimens. The sebum casual level appeared to be decreased by KCZ. CONCLUSION: Comparative data suggest that there may be a significant action of KCZ upon the course of androgenic alopecia and that Malassezia spp. may play a role in the inflammatory reaction. The clinical significance of the results awaits further controlled study in a larger group of subjects.

Hey dbol_winstrol, Nizoral is OTC in Canada. Thus no script.

I suppose there might be a way to get a doc to prescribe something for acne if you had it bad, but unless you have good insurance, no drugs are not free here... there are "co-payments" or something - essentially small fees on prescription drugs to prevent the government health plan from going bankrupt.

It's $9.99 for a bottle of Nizoral. I don't think I'm going to go crying to the doc about "fear of cycle induced acne and hair loss."
