is karma meaningless?

rambleon

New member
well is it?
I,m a rook here and never really bothered to do anything karmarelated (not that i have that much karmapower anyway). The thing is: I can see the idea of showing you guys appreciation for all the great advice i've been getting and all the knowledge to be gained from just reading your posts. But when karma is something u can just buy does this devalue it as a symbol of respect?

What do do u think?

Besides this i just want to thank all of you for making this a great place to hang out and get smarter.

I think it has not been adopted how originally envisaged.

The original idea was to reward / reflect on good posts and information. Due to having so many diverse forums on Elite the karma system can not be seen in this light as what is a good post in C&C does not reflect on ones in AAS etc.

It has become a good marketing / revenue generating exercise for Elite which i suspect was certainly a major factor of its introdcution which can only be good so as to keep on providing these forums.

IMHO i think it has become far too primary for many and has deflected from the original very serious subject matter of using AAS. I see far too many who see Karma / green dots on the internet site as a real importance rather than actually visit this forum to learn / research and discuss the actual subject matter.

What i would say is that for the business of Elitefitness.com it is good but it has evolved into somthing that it was not originally intended in the AAS forum. How you get the balance right is a different debate and even if you looked at different colours of Karma per forum so you could see who was issuing good topics related to your area of interest would not solve as you would find some members hell bent on achieving as many as they could no matter what the colour.

It does make you slightly concerned at the mental age of some members who get so excited about green internet dots whilst actually reading and preparing to inject meds into their body but that is life and just my opinion. Maybe i treat the use of AAS too seriously who knows

Karma is social cement. You hand out Karma to someone as a way of saying thanks or congrats or, even, for showing someone that you like them today or that they made you chuckle. Don't try to read any more into it than that.

You can buy Karma in any quantity you desire; you can win it in the Bookie Forum by the million; you can be given it for having a pleasant demeanor from someone with millions to spare. Just accept Karma as a way of showing appreciation of whatever nature.

Karma is not a way to determine who has the most knowledge.

The only way to decide whether someone posts crap or gen stuff is to keep an eye on their posts and evaluate on that basis. Ignore post-count, Karma, and longevity of the account; they are each mostly worthless on here.

Agreed but when Karma was first announced that was its intention i.e. to note good / worthwhile posts. This was to counter the post whores and members could see who actually gave meaningful replies to questions.

It's function for that purpose became broken from the moment they added the message, "You must spread...".

That one message and restriction on hitting 'good' posts meant that there would be distribution of Karma merely for the sake of distributing it. From there, pretty much everything that followed with regard to Karma devaluation for the purposes you describe became inevitable.

For a very long time, for the majority of members, Karma has little function beyond general feel-good factor here. Even those who purport to abhor it bleat like stuck pigs when hit with red K, yourself being a notable exception.

Anyway, sorry if I seem as though I'm ranting. I probably shouldn't have joined this thread.

karma was originally meant to weed out the assholes/troublemakers/spammers/scammers... at least that's the way it's generally supposed to work on most sites. not sure if it was ever used that way on EF (even though i've been around a long time and seen it change i never really noticed)

now it's more of a revenue generation source as pointed out above.

I agree with above statments, especially the part about other boards on elite,, karma is just a game there,, a while back the "cool" thing to do was bomb for no reason....
I have never posted on any other part of elite other then right here, yet I see some bros on here 4 months or less with more karma then me...
so in a nut shell I do not put much faith in the whole karma thing...

If you pay attention to the board you know who gives good advice, and most of the time karma will not reflect it...

Regardless of the devaluation of Karma Rambleon, I respect you. I didn't really know what it was until reading some posts just now about it. I owe some bros some karma for their help. Being on this site has got me saying bros so much I feel like I am back in my fraternity. Anyway, looks like I will be tracking back and handing out karma today. Sorry if I missed any of you all. I just didn't know.

You must spread some Karma around before giving it to blut wump again.

You can gamble with k true, originally it did not take away from ones own k when you gave it away thus creating free k so to speak, then the system was abused or so the administration that created the system said and now k comes out of your own count, so not so much free love k floating around as there was when i 1st got here! In fact many peeps were very upset when the inflation theory was introduced and a new law was passed!

it's still a popular *hobby* for a few unemployed folks...

I like the idea of K ,but not so much anymore now that you can buy it.

What I have is what I've gotten from members, not payed for w/ money.

That was the idea behind karma to begin with. When i purchased a year platinum membership it came with 100,000 karma that was jan last year, non plat members i think get 100 karma when you sign up, so in a sense peeps who purchase plat's are purchasing k or were don't know how it works now, I agree i didn't come here for k i came for advice and i love to wager the k in the bookie forum because sometimes hearing the same old questions get's old but peeps gotta keep asking cause theres always newbs!
